The GOP can’t believe it. This latest announcement has them shocked.
And the U.S. Senate delivers the White House stunning news that has Republicans losing their minds.
In a vote on Tuesday, the Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as the next U.S. Attorney General, approving President Donald Trump’s nominee in a 54-46 decision. Bondi, a seasoned prosecutor and former Florida attorney general, will now lead the Department of Justice.
The confirmation saw a rare break in party lines, with Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., standing as the lone Democrat to join Republicans in backing Bondi.
DOJ Under Scrutiny Amid Political Tensions
Bondi steps into the role at a time when the Justice Department and FBI are facing intense scrutiny from congressional Democrats. The concerns stem from Trump’s recent decision to grant pardons or commutations to 1,600 individuals convicted in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots. Additionally, the administration has removed over 15 inspectors general and special counsel investigators.
While no immediate plans have surfaced for widespread removals or punitive measures against those involved in the Jan. 6 investigations, a recent move by U.S. Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove has reignited concerns. Last week, Bove ordered the acting FBI director to compile a list of current and former bureau employees involved in the Jan. 6 cases for internal review.
The directive prompted a legal backlash, with FBI agents filing two separate lawsuits on Tuesday. The agents are seeking emergency relief in federal court, arguing that any attempt by the DOJ or FBI to target those involved in the probe would be “unlawful and retaliatory.”
Bondi’s Approach and Pledge for Impartiality
Throughout her confirmation process, Bondi consistently emphasized that her role would be free from political influence.
“Politics has to be taken out of this system,” Bondi asserted last month when speaking to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Her handling of the confirmation hearings won her bipartisan praise, with both Republicans and Democrats commending her poise and ability to navigate difficult questions. Her nomination was widely expected to be successful after securing endorsements from over 110 former senior Justice Department officials, including attorneys general from both parties.
Supporters described her as a prosecutor committed to fairness and collaboration rather than partisan division. In a letter promoting her confirmation, former DOJ officials highlighted her extensive experience, stating, “It is all too rare for senior Justice Department officials — much less Attorneys General — to have such a wealth of experience in the day-to-day work of keeping our communities safe.”
A Tough-on-Crime Agenda
Bondi’s former colleagues from Florida anticipated to Fox News Digital that she will bring the same tough-on-crime approach to Washington, particularly in addressing drug trafficking, fentanyl abuse, and cartel activity at the border.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Democrat Dave Aronberg, who once ran against Bondi for Florida attorney general, recalled his surprise when she later asked him to serve as her drug czar. He acknowledged her willingness to put politics aside when necessary.
“But she stood up to them, and she did what she thought was right, regardless of political pressure,” Aronberg said on the eve of her confirmation vote. “So, that’s what gives me hope here, is that she’ll right the ship and refocus the Department of Justice on policy, not politics.”
Widespread Recognition for Bondi’s Record
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley praised Bondi’s qualifications and tenure as Florida’s first female attorney general during remarks on the Senate floor Monday night. Bondi “fought against pill mills, eliminated the backlog of r*pe test kits, and stood for law and order,” Grassley said, highlighting her re-election as evidence of her effectiveness.
President Trump also celebrated Bondi’s confirmation in a Truth Social post on Wednesday morning, calling her “wonderful and very talented” and predicting that she would “go down as one of the best and most consequential Attorney Generals in the history of our Country.”
