Boston Mayor’s Campaign Tied to Chinese Communist Party Official
A recent investigation by the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) has revealed that Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s 2021 mayoral campaign received significant financial support from a figure connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Gary Yu, a prominent community leader serving as commissioner of the Asian American & Pacific Islanders Commission and president of the New England Chinese American Alliance, reportedly funneled over $300,000 to Wu’s campaign.
Yu, also known by his Chinese name Yu Guoliang, holds a position within the United Front Work Department (UFWD), the CCP’s agency tasked with gathering intelligence and exerting influence abroad, including in the United States, according to the DCNF. Beyond fundraising, Yu has been identified as a recruiter for the Chinese government, with Chinese state media and his leadership in various civic groups supporting these claims.
Mayor Wu, whose family roots trace back to mainland China through her grandparents before relocating to Taiwan and later the U.S., has recently drawn attention for her stance on immigration.
Criticizing President Donald Trump’s policies on illegal immigration in Boston, a designated sanctuary city, Wu has publicly declared that the city “stand[s] with immigrants.” However, Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, made a high-profile visit to Boston, overseeing numerous U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests, including members of notorious gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua (TdA).
“The Communist Party’s UFWD never rests,” said China expert Gordon Chang to the DCNF. “There is no ethnic Chinese official in America who is not targeted. It’s time for law enforcement to investigate the CCP’s ties to Gary Yu and Yu’s ties to Mayor Michelle Wu.”
The UFWD’s reach extends beyond Massachusetts, with reported connections to Minnesota and figures like Gov. Tim Walz, the Democrat’s unsuccessful vice presidential candidate. Yu’s activities include recruiting talent for various Chinese regional governments, such as Hangzhou and Guangzhou.
According to the DCNF, “Yu also agreed to headhunt U.S. talent for at least half a dozen Chinese regional governments, including the cities of Hangzhou and Guangzhou, according to Chinese government and ACFROC [All-China Federation Of Returned Overseas Chinese] announcements.”
“For instance, in November 2019, the CCP announced that Yu agreed to establish an ‘Overseas Talent Recruitment Work Station’ in North America for the party’s Organization Department in Nanning, a city located in the Guangxi Autonomous Region.”
This Organization Department manages programs like the Thousand Talents Plan, which, per the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, encourages participants to “return to China to augment its scientific and military capabilities.”
Chang further commented, “Wu’s ultra-leftism makes her the perfect candidate for CCP recruitment and capture. Or do we have it backward? Is her ultra-leftism the result of CCP recruitment and capture? More than just the people of Boston would like to know.”
Yu’s influence also includes personal contributions totaling $45,515 to Massachusetts Democrats since 2018, with $3,200 directed to Wu’s campaign and $2,175 to Gov. Maura Healey’s campaign, according to campaign finance records.
Michael Lucci, CEO of State Armor, a nonprofit focused on countering CCP influence, told the DCNF, “China’s strategy to influence state and local policymakers is executed, in part, through hundreds of ostensibly ‘civil society’ organizations that are actually affiliated with the CCP’s UFWD.”
He added, “Xi Jinping considers United Front work a critical tool to undermine democracies. It involves influence peddling, intelligence collection, and intellectual property theft, all for the end goal of aligning U.S. subnational governments with China’s foreign policy and exploiting weaknesses they find.”
The revelations raise pressing questions about the intersections of local politics and international influence, leaving Boston residents and observers awaiting further clarity on these complex ties.
