Donald Trump needs to implement his agenda as quickly as possible. But that’ll only happen if Congress cooperates.
And the U.S. House Speaker is sounding the alarm as time is running out on this major Trump agenda.
A high-stakes clash has emerged between tech titan Elon Musk and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., as the two lock horns over a sprawling budget reconciliation bill tied to President Donald Trump’s agenda. Musk’s sharp criticism of the legislation has sparked tension with House Republicans, who are standing firm behind their carefully crafted proposal.
Musk’s Call for a Rewrite
Elon Musk took to X on Wednesday, demanding a complete overhaul of the budget bill. “A new spending bill should be drafted that doesn’t massively grow the deficit and increase the debt ceiling by 5 TRILLION DOLLARS,” he wrote, signaling his disapproval of the bill’s fiscal impact. Later, he doubled down, posting, “K*LL the BILL,” in a blunt call to action.
Musk’s outspoken stance stems from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he has championed aggressive spending cuts. His vocal opposition has placed Republican lawmakers in a tough spot, especially after months of praising his efforts to streamline government operations.
Johnson Defends the Bill
Speaker Johnson, however, pushed back against Musk’s demands, citing practical constraints. “We don’t have time for a brand-new bill,” he told Fox News when pressed for a response. Johnson emphasized the complexity of the legislation, which has been in development for nearly 14 months.
“I want Elon and all my friends to recognize the complexity of what we’ve accomplished here. This extraordinary piece of legislation — record number of savings, record tax cuts for the American people and all the other benefits in it,” Johnson told reporters. He urged critics not to let perfectionism derail progress, adding, “We’re proud of this product. The House Republicans are proud of it, and we’re happy to go out and explain that to everybody.”
A Tight Timeline and Slim Margins
The bill, which narrowly passed the House with a 215–214 vote, reflects Trump’s priorities on taxes, immigration, energy, defense, and the debt limit. With only three House Republicans not voting in favor, GOP leaders are keenly aware of their slim majority.
They’ve urged the Senate, where Republicans also hold a razor-thin majority, to minimize changes.
Johnson also addressed Musk’s concerns about spending cuts, noting that Republicans plan to incorporate DOGE-identified savings in a separate legislative strategy, outside the reconciliation process. This approach balances fiscal responsibility with the need to advance Trump’s agenda.
Senate and White House Weigh In
As the bill moves to the Senate, lawmakers there have signaled a desire for tweaks, which could complicate its path forward. But the White House has remained steadfast in its support.
“The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said earlier this week.
A Growing Rift
Musk’s relentless criticism has caught some Republicans off guard. Johnson admitted he was “surprised” by the tech mogul’s reaction, given the party’s prior alignment with Musk’s efficiency initiatives. The public disagreement highlights a growing divide between Musk’s vision for fiscal restraint and the political realities faced by GOP lawmakers navigating a divided Congress.
As the Senate deliberates, the tension between Musk’s demands and Republican priorities will likely shape the bill’s fate, testing the party’s ability to unify behind Trump’s ambitious agenda.
