Omar is a hallmark of the “progressive” Left. But there’s always more to the story than meets the eye.
Now Ilhan Omar’s son was detained by police for a shocking reason.
Omar’s Account of the Incident
In a Sunday interview with Minnesota’s CBS affiliate WCCO, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) claimed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents recently stopped her U.S.-born son, requiring him to prove his citizenship with a passport before releasing him.
Omar told interviewer Esme Murphy that her son routinely carries his passport in anticipation of such encounters.
“Yesterday, after he made a stop at Target, he did get pulled over by ICE agents, and once he was able to produce his passport ID, they did let him go,” Omar explained.
“So your son went to Target last night with his passport?” Murphy asked.
“He always carries it with him,” Omar said.
“In case he gets pulled over?” Murphy clarified. “Which he did, by ICE.”
“Yes,” Omar replied, adding that ICE agents had previously entered a mosque attended by her son but departed without any detentions. She expressed heightened concern afterward, stating she “had to remind him just how worried I am, because all of these areas that they are talking about are areas where he could possibly find himself in and they are racially profiling, they are looking for young men who look Somali that they think are undocumented.”
Broader Allegations Against ICE Operations
The interview followed Omar’s recent letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, where she sought explanations for increased ICE presence in Minnesota, linking it directly to presidential rhetoric.
“Constituents, advocates, and local officials have documented blatant racial profiling, an egregious level of unnecessary force, and activity that appears designed for social media rather than befitting a law enforcement agency,” she wrote in part. “I am demanding answers on behalf of my constituents whose constitutional rights are being violated on a daily basis.”
“It is clear to me that this surge came in direct response to Trump’s racist comments about Somali people, and about me in particular. Earlier this month, Trump called Somali immigrants ‘garbage’ and ranted that he does not want us in this country,” she added.
Agency Response and Ongoing Dispute
Notably, ICE officials have pushed back on Omar’s specific claim, stating they have no record of any such traffic stop involving her son. Omar’s office, in turn, has questioned the agency’s record-keeping while standing by her account.
The episode unfolds amid a larger federal enforcement push in the Twin Cities targeting undocumented immigrants, which has drawn criticism for potential overreach but is defended as focused on those violating immigration laws.
