Harris County Treasurer Arrested on Burglary Charge
Harris County Treasurer Dr. Carla Wyatt, a Democrat who made history as the first African-American elected to the position in 2023, was arrested on Saturday and charged with burglary of a vehicle.
Video footage obtained by local media showed Wyatt opening and entering an unlocked minivan, according to reports from ABC 13 Eyewitness News.
The owners of the vehicle informed police that they did not know Wyatt and had not given her permission to enter it.
Wyatt, however, maintained that she had permission to be inside the minivan.
She was released after posting bond.
“We are aware that Carla Wyatt was arrested and charged with burglary of a motor vehicle,” the Harris County District Attorney’s office told ABC 13. “As this case is pending, our office will not comment further on the details of the investigation.”
Prior Legal Issues Resurface
This incident follows a 2023 arrest for driving while intoxicated (DWI), during which Wyatt reportedly violated bond conditions on at least two occasions: failing to install an ignition interlock device in January 2024 and being found intoxicated in March 2024.
The DWI charge was ultimately dismissed in August 2025 after Wyatt completed a pretrial diversion program.
Background on Wyatt’s Tenure
Wyatt took office in January 2023, having previously expressed aspirations for her role in public service.
In an earlier interview with KPRC 2, she stated her hope to be seen as “a role model for those people who are coming behind me.”
The current case remains pending, with no further official comments from involved parties at this time.
