Vice President JD Vance has declared that America’s confrontation with Iran is shifting gears.
Speaking to the New York Post, Vance made clear that the opening chapter of this campaign has reached its end and that a new chapter is about to begin.
“There are really two phases to this thing, and the first phase is done,” Vance said.
In that first phase, the United States set out to dismantle the most dangerous pieces of the Iranian threat.
The goal was straightforward: eliminate the nuclear program, wreck the conventional military forces, and strip Tehran of the power-projection tools it had relied on for years.
“The first phase was destroy the nuclear program, destroy their conventional military, destroy their ability to project power in a way that they were able to even a couple of years ago,” he explained.
Those objectives, according to the vice president, have now been met.
Iran no longer possesses the same capacity to intimidate its neighbors or threaten American interests that it enjoyed not long ago.
The military and nuclear infrastructure that once underwrote Tehran’s regional swagger has been broken.
What comes next is a different kind of work. Vance described the second phase as the effort to keep Iran from putting the pieces back together while preserving as much order as possible after the fighting.
In Vance’s words: “ensure that they’re not able to rebuild and try to maintain as much global stability in the wake of that.”
This approach marks a sharp departure from the endless cycles of half-measures and diplomatic theater that defined earlier years.
Instead of allowing Iran to reconstitute its arsenals and restart enrichment activities under the cover of talks, the current strategy prioritizes permanent degradation of those capabilities.
