Republican Report Calls for Investigation Into Liz Cheney Over January 6 Witness Tampering
A report released Tuesday by the Republican majority on the House Committee on House Administration has called for an investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney “for potential criminal witness tampering” during her time on the January 6 Committee.
The report, the second of its kind from the committee examining the events of January 6, 2021, accuses Cheney and the Democrat-led January 6 Committee of misconduct. It also concludes that the committee itself was improperly constituted under the law.
One of the key findings involves Cheney’s alleged communication with Cassidy Hutchinson, a prominent witness for the January 6 Committee. As previously reported by Breitbart News, Cheney reportedly engaged with Hutchinson without the presence of her attorney.
Hutchinson’s testimony included dramatic claims that then-President Donald Trump attempted to seize the steering wheel of his vehicle to force Secret Service agents to drive him to the Capitol during the riot—claims that were later refuted by evidence.
Additionally, subpoenaed text messages revealed that Cheney had communicated with Hutchinson via Alyssah Farah Griffin, a former White House aide who is now a co-host on ABC’s The View. This interaction, which came to light in October, has fueled accusations of improper behavior by Cheney.
The report’s findings have triggered further legal consequences. A Bar complaint has been filed against Cheney, as well as against the 65 Project, a progressive dark money group that had filed its own Bar complaint against Hutchinson’s former attorney, Stefan Passantino.
Passantino is also suing MSNBC legal analyst Andrew Weissman for defamation, alleging that Weissman falsely claimed he coached Hutchinson to lie.
According to Breitbart News, the report also highlights that the January 6 Committee violated its enabling resolution, H. Res. 503, which required it to consist of 13 members, including five chosen in consultation with the House Minority Leader.
Instead, the committee had only nine members: seven Democrats and two anti-Trump Republicans that were practically handpicked by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi’s decision to reject five Republican nominees put forward by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy marked an unprecedented move, creating what critics argue was a one-sided investigation.
Further, the report accuses the January 6 Committee of withholding evidence, failing to include certain materials in its Final Report, and deleting records it was legally required to preserve.
Breitbart News noted that then-incoming Speaker Kevin McCarthy had warned the committee in late 2022 to preserve its records.
Despite this, some evidence was reportedly destroyed, which could have included materials beneficial to January 6 defendants.
Speculation has arisen that outgoing President Joe Biden may issue a pardon for Cheney to shield her from potential prosecution, should a future Trump administration choose to pursue legal action against her over her role in the committee.
The findings in the Republican report have intensified scrutiny over the actions and legacy of the January 6 Committee, raising questions about both the conduct of its members and the fairness of its investigation.
Everyone knew from the start that the committee was a sham, but now we’re learning just how corrupt it really was, especially with Liz Cheney having a major role in it.
