And a Democrat governor has made a jaw-dropping announcement about their 2028 presidential candidacy.

Maryland’s Wes Moore Shuts Down 2028 Presidential Speculation with Focus on State Leadership

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has decisively put an end to speculation about his potential candidacy in the 2028 Democratic presidential race, a contest already buzzing with anticipation for a crowded field. In a lively exchange on ABC’s The View on Thursday, the 46-year-old governor repeatedly dismissed the idea of a White House bid, emphasizing his commitment to his current role.

“I am not running,” Moore declared, reiterating the statement nearly five times as co-host Joy Behar pressed him for his answer. “I am really excited about the work that’s happening right now in the state of Maryland.”

Moore’s name has surfaced frequently in Democratic circles as a promising contender for 2028, alongside other high-profile governors like California’s Gavin Newsom, Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro. Yet, while his peers have kept their options open with vague responses, Moore’s firm stance sets him apart.

“Most politicians do not say things like that. They say, ‘It’s too early,’ all sorts of things,” Behar said. “Wait a minute, what if we really, really need you?” Despite her persistence and the encouragement of co-host Sunny Hostin, who lauded Moore for doing a “bang-up job” in Maryland, the governor held his ground, insisting his focus remains on serving his state.

Moore Earns Praise From Hollywood and Beyond

Moore’s rising profile has drawn attention from unexpected corners, including Hollywood heavyweight George Clooney. Last month, Clooney singled out Moore as a standout leader, praising his response to the tragic collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. “I think he is a guy that has handled this tragedy in Baltimore beautifully,” Clooney said to CNN’s Jake Tapper. He went on to highlight Moore’s impressive resume: “He does two tours of duty in Afghanistan — active duty. He speaks beautifully. He’s smart. He ran a hedge fund.”

“I like him a lot,” Clooney added. “I think he could be someone we could all join in behind.”

Since taking office in 2023, Moore has worked to establish himself as a practical leader dedicated to proving that government can deliver results. His administration has celebrated successes, including Maryland retaining its prestigious AAA bond rating from Fitch and S&P Global Ratings. However, challenges loom: Moody’s recently shifted the state’s outlook from “stable” to “negative,” citing concerns over Maryland’s higher education reform and budget.

“For the first time ever, Maryland is at risk of losing its AAA bond rating. This isn’t just a warning. It’s a sign that years of progress are being undone,” warned Moore’s predecessor, former Republican Governor Larry Hogan.

Navigating National Politics with a State-First Mindset

While Moore has no plans to join the 2028 presidential fray, he didn’t shy away from critiquing federal policy during his The View appearance. He sharply criticized President Trump’s tariff policies, arguing they have sown “chaos” in the economy. Yet, Moore also struck a balanced tone when discussing his approach to working with the administration.

“I will work with anyone who has the people of my state in their best interest,” he said, addressing questions about navigating interactions with Trump. The View hosts referenced Michigan Governor Whitmer’s now-infamous moment of shielding her face with folders during a meeting with the president, but Moore made clear he intends to approach such challenges differently. “While I will work with anyone, though, I will bow to no one.”

Moore also highlighted the growing influence of state leadership in shaping the nation’s future. “I think this is a powerful moment because people are seeing the power of the president and the power of Washington, but I think what people are also seeing is what’s the power of governor, what’s the power of the states, what’s the power of the people,” he said.

As speculation swirls around the 2028 Democratic primary, Moore’s unequivocal rejection of a presidential run highlights his dedication to Maryland.

While admirers like Clooney and The View hosts may see a future commander-in-chief, Moore’s sights are firmly set on the state he governs.
