Rumors have been swirling around the Obamas. The former first lady is finally speaking out.
And Michelle Obama gives a shocking update about her husband Barack.
Michelle Obama Opens Up About Marriage Rumors
Michelle Obama is setting the record straight on persistent rumors about her marriage to former President Barack Obama, emphasizing that their lack of constant public appearances together is simply a reflection of their age and priorities. In a candid conversation on NPR’s Wild Card podcast with host Rachel Martin, the 61-year-old former first lady addressed speculation head-on.
“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,” she told Martin. “It’s like, ‘OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives. We are 60. We’re 60, y’all.’ You just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day.”

The former first lady also spoke about her deliberate choice to step back from high-profile events, such as former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s inauguration.
“One of the major decisions I made this year was to stay put and not attend funerals and inaugurations and all the things that I’m supposed to attend,” she explained.
“That was a part of me using my ambition to say, ‘Let me define what I want to do, apart from what I’m supposed to do, what the world expects of me.’ And I have to own that. Those are my choices.”
Acknowledging the criticism her decisions sparked, she added, “Whatever the backlash was, I had to sit in it and own it. But I didn’t regret it, you know? It’s my life now, and I can say that, now.”
On her podcast, IMO, co-hosted with her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle has been open about the challenges of balancing family, marriage, and her role as first lady. She reflected on how her ambitions took a backseat during those years.
“As a working mother, I — you know, I think all of that stuff, it kind of cut my ambitions short a little bit. Because I had to make a set of decisions: ‘OK, my husband’s over here, I’ve got these kids over here,'” she shared.
“‘I don’t know if I can afford to be ambitious right now. So I have to take a step back.’”
Addressing the marriage rumors directly, Michelle made it clear she’s not one to hide her feelings. Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast with host Steven Bartlett last month, she said:
“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it. My brother would know it. I’d be problem-solving in public. I’m not a martyr.”
Putting rumors to rest, the Obamas have been spotted enjoying public date nights, including an evening at the upscale Lowell Hotel restaurant in Midtown Manhattan last month and another in Washington, D.C., in April.
