The Pope rarely makes such strong moves. But this is a different pontificate.

Now Pope Leo XIV stepped into the Iranian war in a big way.

Pope Leo XIV Issues Urgent Call for Ceasefire in Middle East Conflict Following Tragic School Strike

In a powerful display of moral leadership from the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt plea Sunday for an immediate end to hostilities in the ongoing Middle East war, directly appealing to those directing the fighting to lay down arms and reopen paths to peaceful dialogue.

Pontiff’s Strongest Words Yet Highlight Human Cost of Escalation

Speaking from the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square after his traditional noon blessing, the first American-born pope expressed profound solidarity with suffering families and voiced deep concern over civilian casualties, particularly in attacks that have struck vulnerable sites like schools, hospitals, and residential areas.

“On behalf of the Christians of the Middle East and all women and men of good will, I appeal to those responsible for this conflict. Cease fire so that avenues for dialogue may be reopened. Violence can never lead to the justice, stability, and peace that the people are waiting for,” he said.

The pope’s remarks came amid widespread outrage over a devastating February 28 strike on a girls’ school in Minab, southern Hormozgan province, Iran, which claimed more than 165 lives—many of them children.

U.S. officials have acknowledged the possibility of outdated intelligence contributing to the tragedy and confirmed an investigation is underway.

Vatican Maintains Neutral Stance While Urging Restraint and Humanitarian Focus

Pope Leo XIV also drew attention to the deteriorating situation in Lebanon, warning that further escalation there could spark a severe humanitarian crisis, especially endangering Christian communities in the south.

His call aligns with the Holy See’s longstanding commitment to peace, as Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has emphasized the Church’s open lines of communication with all parties involved.

“The Holy See speaks with everyone. When necessary we speak also with the Americans, with the Israelis and show them what to us are the solutions,” Cardinal Parolin explained.

As the conflict—now in its second week—continues to drive up global oil prices and raise fears of broader regional instability, the pope’s measured yet firm intervention underscores the urgent need for de-escalation.

With civilian losses mounting, his appeal serves as a reminder that true security comes through dialogue, not endless cycles of violence.
