Clinton Points Finger at Biden’s 2024 Decision

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sharply criticized Joe Biden’s choice to seek reelection in 2024 during a recent interview with The New Yorker editor David Remnick. She argued that his persistence cost Democrats the White House and handed victory to President Donald Trump. Clinton described the move as a critical misstep that prevented a competitive primary and a stronger general election matchup.

A “Terrible Mistake” and Missed Opportunity

Clinton did not hold back in assessing Biden’s strategy:

“He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country,”

She recalled Biden’s earlier comments about not running again and expressed regret that he did not follow through:

“I believe that if he had kept to that plan and said in, say, the late summer of ’23 that he wasn’t going to run that he was going to pass you know the torch to the next generation, we would have had a real contest,”

“And very sadly I believe whoever emerged from that contest, whether it was the vice president or a governor or a senator or anybody else, would have beaten Donald Trump,”

Clinton suggested that a robust primary would have produced a nominee better positioned to defeat Trump, avoiding the path that ultimately led to Kamala Harris’s candidacy.

Debate Fallout and Party Dynamics

The conversation highlighted the pivotal role of Biden’s shaky June 2024 debate performance, which Clinton referred to as a “horrendous public disaster.” She noted that White House insiders remained in denial about his vulnerabilities until that moment:

“I know of a few people who tried that, and they were met with total denial and not just from him but from the people around him,” Clinton responded. “There was a belief, and it was strongly held inside the White House that he would win again.”

“After the debate, I think they were in a state of sort of disbelief about what happened,”

Clinton also reflected on her own earlier remarks from May 2023 acknowledging Biden’s age as a legitimate concern, while still expressing optimism about his chances at the time. Biden eventually stepped aside in July 2024 and endorsed Harris, but the party opted against an open primary. A recent leaked Democratic autopsy of the campaign underscored ongoing challenges within the party.
