Democratic Senator Laphonza Butler Defends Vice President Kamala Harris Amid Policy Reversal Criticism

Democratic California Senator Laphonza Butler appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, defending Vice President Kamala Harris against criticism regarding her multiple policy reversals. Butler emphasized that Harris’ changes in stance reflect her humanity and willingness to learn and adapt, rather than inconsistency.

During the interview, CNN host Dana Bash highlighted Harris’ shifting positions on key issues such as defunding the police, illegal immigration, and Medicare. Bash questioned what voters should make of Harris’ evolving policies. In response, Senator Butler underscored Harris’ capacity for growth and dedication to addressing the concerns of the American people.

“I think that voters should think that she’s a human being who learns new things every single day and has the ability to take the time and effort to hear the concerns of all people. I think that they should be certain that she is a fighter and a leader who’s going to do the work on their behalf to ensure that there is an economy that ensures that no one is left behind,” Butler stated.

Butler further elaborated on Harris’ commitment to climate issues, saying, “That there is a climate that we’re going to continue to address the climate crisis in a way that ensures that there is an earth here for young people and for next generations of leaders. I think that they should absolutely believe that she is a leader who cares about people and who’s going to put them first as she has done her entire career.”

When pressed by Bash on concerns of Harris’ perceived flip-flopping, Butler firmly denied any inconsistency, arguing that Harris has remained steadfast in her core values. “No, no concern about flip-flopping. This is a part our — country changes every single day. The conditions of our country changes every single day. The vice president has been consistent in her values and there are lots of different ways to solve the challenges that are in front of us,” Butler asserted. “We’ve got to make sure that we have a candidate who is listening and a candidate who — and a leader who frankly, again, puts the people first.”

Harris’ policy shifts have been particularly scrutinized following her 2020 presidential campaign, where she supported a range of progressive policies, including a ban on fracking, mandatory federal gun buybacks, and abolishing private health insurance. However, since emerging as the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee after President Biden ended his reelection bid on July 21, Harris and her team have sought to clarify her positions on these issues.

Last week, Harris’ national campaign co-chair, Mitch Landrieu, addressed her stance on defunding the police during a CNN interview. Landrieu asserted that Harris’ actions demonstrate a balanced approach to policing, aiming to fund law enforcement while also implementing complementary measures to ensure safety on American streets.

Worthy of note is that U.S. Senator Butler hasn’t even been a sitting U.S. Senator for a year yet. She was a replacement for Dianne Feinstein and her term ends in December of this year. She isn’t running for re-election and will go down as just a fill-in Senator.

The History of Flip-Flopping By Kamala Harris

As Attorney General of California, Harris was known for a tough-on-crime stance. She supported policies that increased sentencing and opposed some criminal justice reform measures. However, during her Senate run and vice-presidential campaign, Harris shifted towards advocating for criminal justice reform. She supported measures like the First Step Act, which aims to reduce sentences for non-violent offenders and improve rehabilitation programs.

During her 2020 presidential campaign, Harris initially supported Medicare for All, a proposal to establish a single-payer healthcare system. However, when her campaign learned that Americans aren’t a fan of communist healthcare systems in which private healthcare is abolished, she quickly changed her tune within a matter of weeks to embrace an “Obama-esque” view on healthcare.

As Attorney General of California, Harris staunchly defended the death penalty, reflecting her office’s stance on capital punishment at the time. Harris’s position later “shifted” to oppose the death penalty, aligning with broader progressive calls for its abolition. She now advocates for ending capital punishment and has supported federal legislation to ban it.

The examples go on and on. Even so-called “progressive” Leftists have pointed out that they believe her biggest weakness is that she seems to really stand for nothing. She can be tossed around by the lightest of winds pushing her in a new direction.

Donald Trump is certainly going to want to highlight this over the course of the general election season. He has railed against politicians who have their own interests at heart rather than the interests of the American people, and many Americans believe Kamala Harris is one such politician.
