Congress can’t get its act together. The D.C. establishment is getting in Trump’s way.

As the Senate just voted down a bill that Donald Trump is not happy about.

Donald Trump on his campaign trail said that he wanted to be a candidate about common sense and returning America to common sense. In his opinion, the career political brass has sold out American common sense in favor of radical agendas that have made millions upon millions of Americans feel disaffected by their government officials these days. Many Americans resonate with his message and that’s why he was able to complete the most incredible political comeback ever in winning the 2024 Presidential election.

President Trump also spent time on his inauguration day in his speech to give more credence to the idea that America simply needs to get back to common sense in order to be a great nation once more. That will take basic executive orders and legislation that everyone should be able to get behind. Apparently that’s too much of an ask for many Democrats in Congress.

Senate Democrats Block Legislation Protecting Survivors of Botched Abortions

On Wednesday afternoon, every Senate Democrat voted against invoking cloture on a piece of legislation aimed at requiring medical care for babies who survive botched abortions. The proposed law, known as the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, was introduced by Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma. Despite garnering substantial support from Republicans, the bill failed to meet the necessary 60-vote filibuster threshold, with the Senate voting 52-47 against moving forward.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act mandates that healthcare practitioners provide the same level of care for a child who survives an abortion as they would for any newborn child during routine childbirth. Senator Lankford has been a vocal advocate for the bill, emphasizing its importance in protecting newborns who survive failed abortion procedures.

In remarks on the Senate floor, Lankford expressed his opposition to the notion that babies who survive botched abortions should be left to die. “Yesterday my Democratic] colleagues spent an hour on the floor saying that that child who survives a botched abortion should die,” he said. “I disagree.” He further explained the issue, noting, “This is not just an academic issue. It’s real. It infanticide is already illegal … but what is still allowed is a tiny, little loophole that if an abortion is botched, everyone can just back away and watch the child die. They do not have to give that child medical care.”

The debate surrounding the bill has drawn significant attention, with strong opposition from Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Senate Majority Leader John Thune had predicted the vote outcome earlier, warning that Senate Democrats would vote against the bill. “They will vote against protection for a living, breathing newborn baby because that child has been born alive after an attempted abortion,” Thune stated. “They are afraid if they recognize the humanity of a living, breathing born baby in an abortion clinic they might end up pointing to the humanity of the unborn baby in the abortion clinic.”

Senator Schumer and other Senate Democrats strongly criticized the legislation, calling it “pernicious as they come.” During floor remarks, Schumer labeled the bill an attack on women’s healthcare, accusing proponents of spreading “false narratives and outright fear-mongering.” He argued that the legislation could result in more legal risks for doctors, despite the fact that infanticide is already illegal under current law.

In addition to the Senate vote, a similar version of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is set to be considered in the House. The bill, introduced by Republican Representative Ann Wagner of Missouri, is expected to be voted on later this week. The bill passed the House in January 2023 with only one Democratic lawmaker voting in favor. However, it failed to advance in the Senate due to strong opposition from Democratic lawmakers and Schumer’s refusal to bring it to a vote.

Pro-life activists are set to gather in Washington, D.C. today for the annual March for Life. The march serves as a platform for those advocating for the protection of the unborn and for those seeking to prevent infanticide in cases of botched abortions. This is an issue that most Americans agree with even though Democrats want to prevent such common sense legislation from becoming law.

Very few Americans indicate in surveys that they want abortion to be legal through all nine months of a pregnancy, which is the official stance of the Democrat Party. Gallup surveys show that upwards of 70% of Americans say they want some restrictions on abortion, even if they are light restrictions. So it really shouldn’t be controversial passing legislation to protect babies who survived a botched abortion. There are also growing calls for Planned Parenthood to be audited and defunded of the nearly $1 billion in federal taxpayer dollars they receive ever year.
