Schumer has had a rough start to the year. He and his party are spiraling out of control.

And Chuck Schumer’s career is over after being smacked with this devastating news.

Maryland Congressman Calls for Fresh Senate Leadership After Schumer’s Shutdown Vote

A Maryland Democratic congressman took a bold stance this week, pressing his Senate counterparts to shake up their leadership following Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s unexpected decision to side with Republicans on a spending bill. The vote, which staved off a government shutdown last week, has sparked a firestorm of debate within the Democratic Party.

Speaking at a lively town hall in the leafy suburbs east of Washington, DC, Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) didn’t mince words. “I thought it was critical to make sure that we block that bill. I was deeply disappointed that Senator Schumer voted with the Republicans,” he told a crowd of engaged constituents.

Ivey, who has served Maryland’s 5th District since taking office in 2023, pointed to the six-month spending measure—a continuing resolution (CR)—as a misstep for Democrats.

Adding fuel to the fire, Ivey highlighted a surprising nod from President Trump, who took to Truth Social to praise Schumer’s vote. In his post, Trump wrote that it “took ‘guts’ and courage’” to do “the right thing.” For Ivey, that was a red flag.

“You know you’re on bad ground when you get a personal tweet from Donald Trump thanking you for your vote, right? We don’t want to be there,” he quipped.

Ivey didn’t stop at criticism. He shone a spotlight on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), celebrating his success in rallying House Democrats against the GOP-drafted CR. “It’s important for us to make sure that at this critical time we have leaders that are going to lead us in the right direction,” Ivey said.

“We had Hakeem Jeffries lead the fight against the CR to the tune of 213-1 – Schumer was on the other side. Hakeem met the moment. Schumer did not.”

The contrast was stark, and Ivey’s remarks came on the same day Jeffries issued a joint statement with Schumer, signaling unity despite the tension. At a press conference in his district, Jeffries voiced support for Schumer, even as Ivey pushed for change.

“I respect Chuck Schumer. I think he’s had a great, long-standing career. He’s done a lot of great things,” Ivey acknowledged.

“But I’m afraid that it may be time for the Senate Democrats to pick new leadership as we move forward.” The crowd erupted in applause, with most attendees backing his call.

Still, Ivey’s influence has its limits. As a House member, he holds no sway over who leads Senate Democrats.

Schumer’s vote wasn’t an isolated move—nine other Senate Democrats joined him to push the CR past the 60-vote threshold needed for a final tally, where it cleared with a simple majority.

Just a day earlier, Schumer had warned Republicans they couldn’t count on Democratic support. “Our caucus is unified on a clean CR that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that can pass,” he’d declared—only to reverse course hours later.

The fallout has drawn reactions across the party. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) weighed in Tuesday, expressing faith in Schumer’s leadership while critiquing his tactics. “I myself don’t give away anything for nothing,” she told reporters.

“I think that’s what happened the other day.” Meanwhile, Schumer defended his choice on The View, arguing that a shutdown would have caused “devastation like we’ve never seen.” He admitted it was a tough call but insisted, “I felt as a leader I had to do it.”

For now, Schumer’s decision has left Democrats wrestling with their next steps—and Ivey’s plea for new leadership has only turned up the heat.
