The Trump administration has locked down the southern border. But a new problem has popped up.
And Trump’s border czar raised everyone’s eyebrows with this news of a new border crisis.
Border Czar Alleges New Problems On The Horizon For U.S. Northern Border
Tom Homan, the border czar appointed by President Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that the administration is shifting its focus to address illegal immigration along the U.S.-Canadian border. This strategic pivot comes as illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border have plummeted by an impressive 96% since Trump took office, while the northern border has seen a 74% reduction in the same period. To tackle the remaining challenges up north, Homan revealed plans to redirect resources from the southern border to enhance enforcement efforts against illegal immigrants and fentanyl trafficking across the Canadian frontier.
Homan emphasized the need for increased action along the northern border, stating, “Well, like I said, the southern border is down 96%, the northern border is down by about 74% so we have more work to do up there.” He noted that while he has met with Canadian leadership twice, and they have ramped up their border and fentanyl enforcement efforts, more is required.
“I’ve met with the leadership in Canada on two different occasions, they are stepping up border enforcement, they are stepping up the fentanyl enforcement, but not enough. The president wants more and we expect more,” Homan explained. Having grown up near the northern border, he added, “It’s personal to me. So, we need to do more on the northern border now that we’ve got the southern border locked down.”
To achieve this, the administration will reallocate manpower and technology northward. “And instead of stealing agents from the northern border to deal with the crisis on the southern border, now we’re gonna start reassigning assets to the northern border, manpower and technology, to make sure that the northern border is safe too,” Homan said.
This shift in resources follows a dramatic decline in illegal encounters at the northern border since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, encounters dropped from over 11,600 in December to just over 4,000 in February—a stark contrast to the Biden administration, during which northern border crossings surged by over 1,000% and hit a peak of weekly migrant arrests in May of that administration’s final year.
Under Biden, Border Patrol agents observed a notable increase in Indian and East Asian migrants crossing the northern border in the 2024 fiscal year. Historically, many migrants apprehended there were Mexican nationals who had flown into Canada visa-free—a policy Canada has since reversed. In the 2022 fiscal year, officials told the Daily Caller News Foundation that more than half of the northern border crossers had arrived in Canada by plane from Latin American countries before making their way into the U.S.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has swiftly turned the tide on the southern border crisis. On February 17, Homan reported that Border Patrol encountered just 229 illegal immigrants in a single day—the lowest figure since the 1960s. February also marked a historic low, with only 8,347 illegal immigrants apprehended across the entire month, down 71% from January’s 29,101. This stands in sharp contrast to the Biden era, which saw a record high of over 12,600 migrant encounters in a single day on December 18, 2023.
Homan expressed enthusiasm for the administration’s success during his Thursday interview, saying, “I feel like a kid in a candy shop” as he watches illegal immigrants being detained and deported. The president has also taken a hard stance against Canada’s role in the northern border issues, imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in February. In response, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau allocated $1.3 billion to bolster northern border security and appointed a fentanyl czar to combat the drug’s flow into the U.S.
With the southern border allegedly largely secured, the Trump administration’s redeployment of assets to the north signals a comprehensive approach to immigration enforcement, aiming to ensure safety and control across all U.S. borders.
