And a Leftist Governor is under investigation for the most stunning reason.

New Jersey Governor Faces Probe Over Immigration Policy Clash

In a move that has sparked heated debate, Acting U.S. District Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba has launched an investigation targeting Democratic Governor Phil Murphy and state Attorney General Matt Platkin.

The probe, announced during an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity on Thursday night, centers on Murphy’s directive barring state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. Habba, a former personal attorney and spokesperson for President Trump, didn’t mince words as she accused the governor and his administration of obstructing federal efforts to enforce immigration laws.

Speaking directly to host Sean Hannity, Habba declared, “And unfortunately, I will announce on your show tonight, Sean, and I want it to be a warning for everybody, that I have instructed my office today to open an investigation into Governor Murphy, to open an investigation into Attorney General Platkin, who also instructed the state police not to assist any of our federal agencies that are under my directions.”

Her remarks signal a sharp escalation in tensions between New Jersey’s state leadership and the federal government.

At the heart of the controversy is New Jersey’s Immigration Trust Directive, a policy reemphasized in 2018 that prohibits state police from assisting federal immigration enforcement, including acting on warrants listed in federal databases. Habba argued that this stance jeopardizes the safety of New Jersey residents.

“This is putting the people in my state in jeopardy,” she said, claiming that state officers have been explicitly told not to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when they encounter individuals with valid deportation warrants during routine checks.

Habba, who stepped into her role as U.S. District Attorney on March 24, framed the investigation as a necessary response to what she sees as defiance of federal authority. “That will no longer stand. [US Attorney General] Pam Bondi has made it clear and so has our president that we are to take all criminals, violent criminals and criminals out of this country and to completely enforce federal law,” she stated.

She warned that anyone interfering with these efforts could face charges for obstruction or concealment, adding with conviction, “And I will come after hard.”

The investigation comes amid heightened scrutiny of Murphy’s approach to immigration enforcement. Earlier this year, the governor openly boasted about disrupting ICE operations near his $10 million Middletown mansion.

“There was a time when ICE was just randomly showing up on street corners and apprehending… brothers and sisters from the immigrant community,” Murphy said at a press conference shortly after Trump’s election to a second term. He recounted an incident where he intervened personally, stating, “I just went there one night with my detail and just hung out there.”

Murphy suggested his presence may have deterred federal agents, noting, “Whether that scared them off or not I don’t know but it’s an example of a small step that we’re willing to try anything if it’s contrary to our values.”

Murphy’s comments haven’t stopped there. In a public discussion at Montclair State University in February, he revealed that he had provided shelter to an undocumented immigrant at his home. “I don’t want to get into too much detail, but there’s someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to and we said, ‘You know what, let’s have her live at our house above our garage,’” he said.

He then issued a provocative challenge to federal authorities: “And good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.” Murphy went further, drawing a controversial parallel between current immigration enforcement and the rise of Nazi Germany, stating, “The Germans in the ‘20s and ‘30s got tired, they got sick of fighting, and look at the price we paid.”

The clash has drawn attention to New Jersey’s immigration policies, particularly in light of recent federal actions. According to Shore News Network, the government recently added 27,000 “Outstanding Administrative Warrants for Removal from the United States,” amplifying the stakes of the state-federal standoff.

As Habba’s investigation unfolds, it promises to intensify the debate over immigration enforcement and the balance of power between state and federal authorities in New Jersey.

For now, all eyes are on how Murphy and Platkin will respond to this unprecedented challenge.
