Former Obama Aide Admits To Seeing Joe Biden’s Failing Health First Hand
The 2024 presidential election exposed a troubling reality: Democrats and their allies in the media obscured President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline, misleading the American public about his fitness to lead. As evidence mounts that key figures within the party were aware of Biden’s struggles, the need for accountability grows urgent. The public deserves transparency, not excuses, from a party that prioritized political strategy over truth.
Former Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer revealed on his podcast Pod Save America that he witnessed Biden’s decline firsthand at a White House reception during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner weekend in April 2024. “I was at a White House reception and he was bad. He was quite bad in it. And he told the same story twice. He just seemed mostly old,” Pfeiffer admitted. Yet, despite these observations, he dismissed concerns about Biden’s ability to serve, stating, “In no way did I look at that and say that man cannot do the job of president.” This admission raises questions about why Pfeiffer and others failed to act on what they saw.
Pfeiffer’s account is not isolated. Axios journalist Alex Thompson, who received an award for his coverage of Biden’s health, criticized himself and fellow journalists for not recognizing the president’s decline sooner. During his April 26, 2024, acceptance speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Thompson acknowledged the media’s shortcomings in addressing the issue. The reluctance of journalists to probe Biden’s condition allowed Democrats to maintain a facade of competence, even as warning signs became impossible to ignore.
Before the White House reception, Pfeiffer had spoken with Biden and others who vouched for the president’s sharpness. “He called me right before the election and I talked to him for like five, 10 minutes, and he was great. And I interviewed him before the election and he was totally fine … not even a question there,” Pfeiffer recalled. He also noted, “I had talked to a bunch of people who had gone to work on the campaign who had told me he’s great.” These assurances, however, crumbled when Pfeiffer saw Biden in person, raising doubts about the credibility of those defending the president’s health.
Pfeiffer’s rationalizations at the time reveal a troubling willingness to overlook red flags. He brushed off Biden’s poor performance at the reception, attributing it to external factors. “I also thought to myself, ‘Well, it’s Friday, this is a super bizarre event, the night before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,’” he said. “I knew he was coming from speech prep and going back to speech prep on a Friday evening. Even [former President] Barack Obama was not a great communicator on a Friday evening.” Such excuses suggest a deliberate effort to downplay Biden’s struggles, even among those close to the administration.
The special counsel Robert Hur’s February 2024 report added fuel to the fire, documenting Biden’s memory lapses during an investigation into classified documents. The report noted that Biden appeared as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” a perception that influenced Hur’s decision not to pursue charges. The transcript of Hur’s interview with Biden revealed significant lapses, including confusion about the timeline of his vice presidency and the date of his son Beau’s death. These findings should have prompted serious scrutiny, yet Democrats and their media allies largely dismissed them.
Pfeiffer himself referenced the Hur report, claiming he believed Biden’s lapses were not widespread. “I trusted the people who I talked to, who said he was fine. And I also believed — and I said this at the time after the Robert Hur report came out is — that if Biden really was having these mental lapses all over town, everyone would know it,” he said. This statement exposes a disconnect: either Pfeiffer was misled by those around Biden, or he chose to believe a convenient narrative over mounting evidence.
The public, however, was not so easily swayed. Voters had expressed concerns about Biden’s mental fitness as early as the 2020 campaign, concerns that Republicans consistently amplified. Corporate media outlets, however, downplayed these doubts, framing them as partisan attacks rather than legitimate questions. This dismissal persisted until Biden’s catastrophic debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024, which forced Democrats to confront the reality they had long ignored.
The fallout from the debate was swift. By July 2024, former Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee, a move that pointed to the party’s belated acknowledgment of his unfitness to run. The switch, however, did little to erase the damage caused by months of deception. Democrats’ failure to address Biden’s decline earlier eroded public trust, leaving many to wonder how such a critical issue was swept under the rug.
Pfeiffer’s concerns about Biden’s ability to campaign in 2024 further expose the party’s miscalculations. “I had real concerns that he could not do it for four more years,” he admitted. Yet, these concerns did not translate into public action or calls for transparency. Instead, Democrats forged ahead, betting that Biden’s incumbency and media support would carry him through. This gamble backfired, leaving the party scrambling to salvage its credibility.
The revelations from Pfeiffer, Thompson, and others demand a reckoning. Democrats cannot hide behind claims of ignorance or assurances from aides. The American people deserve answers about why the truth about Biden’s health was concealed and who was complicit in maintaining the illusion of his fitness. As long as Democrats refuse to come clean and level with the American people, they’ll continue to lose credibility and favorability.
