Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman has publicly denounced the chaos, labeling it “anarchy” and taking his own party to task for its silence. “My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement,” Fetterman wrote on X, alongside a photo of burning cars and a man waving a Mexican flag.
In response to the escalating violence, President Donald Trump has taken decisive action, deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Saturday night to support federal immigration officers. The White House has framed the move as a necessary step to restore order amid criticism of California’s Democratic leadership.
Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., found herself at the center of the storm when she attempted to enter a Los Angeles detention facility over the weekend. Denied entry by a National Guard member, Waters later claimed she was pleading with guardsmen not to shoot anyone, highlighting the tense standoff between federal forces and local critics.
The Trump administration has pointed the finger at California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, accusing them of failing to protect their citizens. “If they can’t do their jobs, the federal government will step in to solve the problem,” Trump warned on Truth Social, emphasizing his resolve to tackle the unrest head-on.
White House Border Czar Tom Homan echoed the president’s stance in an interview with Fox News. “We’re gonna bring the National Guard in tonight, and we’re gonna continue doing our job,” Homan said. “We’re gonna push back on these people, and we’re gonna enforce the law.”

To bolster federal efforts, Trump has since dispatched an additional 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to the city. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has pushed back, filing a lawsuit against Trump for activating the California National Guard without his consent, further intensifying the clash between state and federal authorities.
The White House has justified the troop deployments, stating that “violent mobs have attacked ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles.” The administration insists these operations are critical to curbing the flow of illegal criminals into the country.
