President Trump is furious. It’s crucial that Republicans band together to support his agenda.
But now Donald Trump is red with rage over this Republican senator’s betrayal.
Trump Clashes with Senator Tillis Over the “Big, Beautiful Bill”
In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump targeted North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis for opposing his “big beautiful” tax-and-spending legislation. The Senate faced a stalled procedural vote on Saturday, as GOP leaders hustled to secure last-minute support for the multi-trillion-dollar package.
“Looks like Senator Thom Tillis, as usual, wants to tell the Nation that he’s giving them a 68% Tax Increase, as opposed to the Biggest Tax Cut in American History!” Trump posted, as the Senate’s vote to advance the bill dragged on for nearly three hours without a resolution.
The president laid out his vision for the legislation, emphasizing its benefits: “America wants Reduced Taxes, including NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME, AND NO TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY, Interest Deductions on Cars, Border Security, a Strong Military, and a Bill which is GREAT for our Farmers, Manufacturers and, Employment, in general.”
He didn’t hold back his frustration, adding, “Thom Tillis is making a BIG MISTAKE for America, and the Wonderful People of North Carolina!”
Trump has been pushing hard for Congress to pass the bill before his self-imposed July 4 deadline. His criticism came shortly after Tillis voted against advancing the measure, joined by Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Rand Paul of Kentucky, who also withheld support during the rare weekend session.
With the Republicans holding a slim 53-47 Senate majority, the party is only able to lose three votes to pass the bill, relying on Vice President JD Vance to break a potential tie. Vance was on Capitol Hill by about 8:30 p.m., ready to cast a deciding vote if needed.
If the measure clears this hurdle, the Senate will move to debate the nearly 1,000-page bill, a process that could stretch for hours. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to have the entire document read aloud before a final vote.
The legislation aims to cement Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, increase border security funding, and repeal green-energy tax credits from the Biden administration.
To accommodate these provisions, the bill would raise the debt ceiling by approximately $5 trillion.
Tillis, who had signaled his opposition earlier, cited concerns over Medicaid provisions, urging the Senate to adopt the “commonsense” approach from an earlier House version.
“We can and must do better than this,” he stated, highlighting the sticking point that has divided some Republicans.
Trump escalated his attack in a follow-up post, hinting at political consequences for Tillis. “Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis,” he wrote.
“I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Since President Trump made this post, Tillis has announced that he will not be running for reelection for another term in the Senate.
