Let’s face it, the federal government is bloated beyond belief. Something has to be done.
And now heads are starting to roll in this federal agency thanks to Trump.
Trump Administration Streamlines State Department for Efficiency
The State Department announced Thursday that it will soon lay off nearly 2,000 employees, following a Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for President Donald Trump’s initiative to reduce the federal workforce.
The move, part of a broader reorganization plan unveiled by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in April, aims to eliminate redundant functions and enhance the department’s ability to execute Trump’s foreign policy vision.
In a February executive order, Trump directed Rubio to overhaul the foreign service to ensure it “faithfully” implements his agenda, prioritizing efficiency and alignment with American interests.
Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael Rigas informed staff via email, stating, “First and foremost, we want to thank them for their dedication and service to the United States,” signaling a commitment to a leaner, more effective agency under Trump’s leadership.
Targeted Reductions to Boost Diplomatic Effectiveness
The reorganization, detailed in plans submitted to Congress in May, targets approximately 1,800 of the State Department’s estimated 18,000 domestic employees, with an additional 1,575 having opted for deferred resignations.
Over 300 of the department’s 734 bureaus and offices will be streamlined, merged, or eliminated to cut bureaucracy.
Rigas emphasized that the department has made “every effort” to support departing employees, including those in Deferred Resignation Programs, adding:
“On behalf of Department leadership, we extend our gratitude for your hard work and commitment to executing this reorganization and for your ongoing dedication to advancing U.S. national interests across the world.”
With notifications to affected staff imminent and terminations set to begin as early as Friday, the department is poised to enter the final phase of its restructuring, focusing on “results-driven diplomacy” to advance Trump’s America First foreign policy.
Overcoming Obstacles for National Benefit
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters Thursday that judicial delays had slowed the layoffs, noting, “There has been a delay – not to our interests, but because of the courts.”
She stressed the urgency of the reforms, stating, “When something is too large to operate, too bureaucratic, to actually function, and to deliver projects, or action, it has to change.”
The plan, now accelerated following the Supreme Court’s decision, reflects President Trump’s commitment to reducing government inefficiency and ensuring the State Department operates with precision to serve national interests.
