Democrats Want More Gun Control In Wake Of Minneapolis School Shooting

A heartbreaking shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on Wednesday has left the community devastated and spurred Democratic congressional leaders to renew their urgent calls for stronger gun control measures. The tragedy, which claimed the lives of two young children, has once again brought the issue of gun violence in America’s schools into focus.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., discussed the tragedy on X, writing, “I’m horrified by the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis and closely monitoring the situation. I’m thankful for the first responders on the scene.”

“Students and teachers should not be putting their lives on the line just by going back to school. We must do more to stop gun violence in America.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called the incident “horrifying,” while also stating, “Praying for the children, families and first responders during this moment of terror and unimaginable grief. Weapons of war have no place in our neighborhoods, streets or schools.”

Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., voiced a similar sentiment on social media, declaring, “Events like these should not be our ‘normal.’ The simple solution is to pass sensible gun control. Without that, these tragedies will continue to happen, and children will continue to die.

According to the Richfield Police Department, the shooting impacted as many as 20 victims. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed during a press conference that two children, ages 8 and 10, lost their lives, and their parents have been informed of the news.

The Minneapolis Police Department later issued a statement reassuring the public that “there is no active threat to the community at this time” and that “the shooter is contained.”

Fox 9 reported, citing sources, that the suspect, whose identity remains publicly undisclosed at the time of writing, is deceased.

Minnesota lawmakers from both parties expressed their sorrow and support for those affected. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., the state’s highest-ranking congressional member, stated, “We are tracking the reports about a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.”

“Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and first responders on the scene.”

Minnesota’s Democratic Senators, Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar, also extended their condolences and gratitude to first responders. Smith, highlighting the tragedy’s timing, posted on X, “It’s the first week of school. These kids should not be fearing for their lives.”

While neither senator initially emphasized gun control, Klobuchar later spoke out on CNN, addressing the root of what she believes is the issue:

“We’ve done these things, but there’s much bigger things we could do when it comes to background checks and assault weapons, and having more national standards in place, and being stricter about getting these guns out there.”

She added, “And if a bunch of kids praying in a church and shot down through the windows of that church and locked into that by a mad man, isn’t enough to make people move, I just don’t know what is.”
