Schumer has been haunting politics for decades. But his time may finally be up.
Now Chuck Schumer was sucker-punched with a devastating report he can’t escape.
Schumer’s Approval Plunges to Historic Lows Among Disgruntled Democrats
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) has cratered to the least popular Democratic leader in modern polling history, with even his own party turning against him amid perceptions of weak opposition to President Trump and a disastrous government shutdown strategy.
“He’s Underwater with Democrats, His Own Party,” Analyst Warns
CNN’s Harry Enten laid out the grim numbers Tuesday on CNN News Central, revealing Schumer’s net favorability among Democrats hit a dismal minus-four in September, per Pew Research and FiveThirtyEight data—marking the worst showing for any Democratic Senate leader since 1985.
“He’s underwater with Democrats, his own party,” Mr. Enten said.
The analyst said it’s because “Democrats want a fighter.”
Almost 40% of Democrats said they have a negative view of Mr. Schumer, according to the September survey.
Nearly 70% of Democrats believe their congressional leaders are doing “too little” to fight Trump, while half of all Americans hold unfavorable views of Schumer—figures captured before the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, which Democrats prolonged for weeks with no concessions gained.
AOC Looms as 2028 Threat as Rank-and-File Democrats Demand Schumer’s Ouster
With eight Senate Democrats breaking ranks to end the shutdown and force a vote on expiring Obamacare subsidies, calls are growing for Schumer’s removal after he whipped his caucus to filibuster funding for a month—only to watch Republicans hold firm.
When asked by anchor Sara Sidner about a potential challenge to his Senate seat, Mr. Enten said Mr. Schumer is seen more favorably by New York Democrats, but not as much as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
“If she decides to challenge Chuck Schumer come 2028, she’s got a real leg up on the competition,” he said. “I dare say, at this point, she would be the favorite to beat him, which would be something that would just blow my mind.”
The collapse in support follows Schumer’s earlier capitulation in March, when he voted for a Republican spending bill to avert a shutdown—further eroding trust among progressives who now view Democratic leadership as feckless and out of touch.
