Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana delivered a blunt assessment this past week.
Speaking on NewsNation Live, the Republican lawmaker made clear that America has little to show for its military involvement with Iran and that further ground commitments would be a costly error.
The exchange came when host Nichole Berlie pressed him on the path forward.
She inquired, “What do you think it’s going to take to get back on a path to peace with Iran?”
Cassidy did not dodge:
“Yeah. It appears it was a mistake to go to war in the first place. I’ll just say that. The objectives have not been obtained.”
“But that said, the economic blockade that we’re placing now seems to be the best bet without going with boots on the ground. It’s a tough situation, it’s a bad situation. But we have to make the best of it now.”
The senator noted that the goals set at the start remain unmet.
Regime change talk, nuclear rollback promises, and regional stability claims have not materialized.
Instead the country faces the same threats and higher costs.
Cassidy pointed to the current economic blockade as the smarter course.
Cutting off the regime’s cash flow and limiting its ability to fund proxies avoids the body bags and the trillion-dollar price tags that come with occupation.
