President Biden’s been behind the curtains reshaping America. But one man is utterly fed up.
And now a U.S. House Republican is plotting to do the unthinkable to Joe Biden.
Since day one of stepping into the Oval Office, Joe Biden and his administration has been obsessed with using the federal government however they can to crack down on law-abiding Americans and their First and Second Amendment rights that they are exercising.
In early 2022, Joe Biden announced that they would be trying to enter a new rule into the federal regulation register for the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agency that would go after so-called “ghost guns.” The Biden administration saying that they were trying to keep un-trackable firearms off the streets actually just made it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to modify their weapons how they see fit or even build guns lawfully.
President Biden tried to make it sound like ghost guns were responsible for a ton of violent gun crime in America, but the truth is that very little ghost guns are used in homicides or shootings of any sort. It was a crackdown designed from the beginning to chip away at Second Amendment rights.
Even the Appeals Court system ruled that large portions of the executive order from 2022 was unconstitutional and now the U.S. Supreme Court has said they are reviewing the matter and the order’s constitutionality.
Now the Biden administration is back at it trying to dance the line of infringing on the rights of Americans with a new bureaucratic rule that will make life for gun manufacturers and shops a nightmare.
However, in response, U.S. House Representative Mark Green (R-TN) is leading a coalition of dozens and dozens of colleagues who are trying to pass legislation to stop the Biden administration in its tracks.
Congressional Republicans Move to Overturn Biden Administration’s Firearm Export Rule
On Wednesday, Mark Green, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, introduced a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution aimed at overturning a rule released by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on April 30. This rule introduces a series of licensing changes that could complicate business for firearm manufacturers and sellers. Green’s resolution has garnered support from 69 other Republicans.
“Congress cannot abandon American firearm exporters to the whims of an administration hellbent on undermining their businesses, their livelihoods, and their constitutional freedoms,” Green told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Congress has the authority to rein in rogue federal agencies—it’s time we used it.”
On the Senate side, Republican Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty is set to introduce the CRA resolution’s counterpart. Hagerty expressed strong opposition to the rule, drawing parallels to the controversial Operation Choke Point.
“This rule is another Operation Choke Point—a politically motivated effort that significantly harms Tennessee manufacturers—and will consequently destroy U.S. jobs and small businesses that support the firearm and ammunition industry,” Hagerty stated on April 30. “The Biden administration has made clear that its goal is to damage the firearm industry that supplies the products that allow Americans to exercise their constitutional freedom. Crushing American exports is just a means to skirt the legislative process and do damage to yet another Biden-disfavored industry.”
Green’s actions extend beyond the CRA. In early May, he introduced the Stop the Bureaucratic Ineptitude Shuttering Respectable and Upstanding Lawful Exporters Act (Stop the BIS RULE Act), a bill designed to prevent federal funds from being used to finalize, implement, or enforce the new rule.
Green has been vocal about the potential negative impacts of the rule. He previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation that it would “harm American business owners, hinder the right of people overseas to protect themselves, and will allow China and Russia to fill the void.”
The rule in question reduces the validity period of export licenses from four years to one, introduces a “crime control” licensing requirement that considers crime rates in other countries, and applies a “presumption of denial” to export applications to 36 countries deemed high-risk.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo defended the rule, stating that it aims to protect “America’s national security by making it harder for criminals, terrorists, and cartels to get their hands on U.S.-made firearms.” She emphasized that these firearms, if they fall into the wrong hands, could be used in ways that undermine U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.
The BIS, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, issued the rule following an extensive 90-day pause on new export licenses for civilian firearms, which ultimately extended over 180 days.
President Joe Biden has a longstanding record of supporting gun control measures. Notably, as a senator in 1994, he played a pivotal role in passing a ten-year ban on assault weapons and continues to advocate for a federal ban.
As the political battle over firearm regulations continues, the introduction of the CRA resolution by Rep. Green and the complementary actions by Sen. Hagerty signal a significant pushback against the Biden administration’s latest efforts to regulate firearm exports.
