It seems apparent that Kamala Harris will be the Democrat nominee for president. But her running mate has been up in the air until now.
Because this Democrat VP announcement is sending shockwaves through Washington, D.C.
The Contenders
Vice President Kamala Harris is reportedly considering several Democrats across the country for her vice presidential running mate after she announced her campaign on Sunday and, controversially, secured the nomination within 24 hours.
Harris launched her campaign after President Joe Biden abruptly ended his struggling reelection bid on Sunday.
Harris, 59, ran for president in 2020 but was forced out of the Democratic primary before any voting occurred due to a lack of voter interest.
“Harris’ campaign has reportedly requested vetting materials on several candidates, including North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), according to The Wall Street Journal.”
Harris' campaign has requested vetting materials from potential VPs, including Cooper (NC), Kelly (AZ), Shapiro (PA), Whitmer (MI), Walz (MN) + Pritzker (IL), according to a person familiar. Beshear told CNN he hasn't been asked to submit info at this point.

One frequently mentioned name is Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat in a red state who won reelection last year.
Beshear told CNN that he has not been asked to submit any paperwork to Harris’ campaign and that the only way he would consider being someone’s vice presidential pick “is if I felt that I could help my people in Kentucky more in a different role or that there was a chance to move past the partisanship, the constant fighting.”
Other names in the mix include Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).
Renewed Interest
Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign raked in over $100 million between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening, the campaign announced early Tuesday.
Harris launched her campaign after President Biden abruptly ended his bid for reelection and endorsed her on Sunday.
This staggering sum, raised across Harris’ campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees, highlights the vice president’s immense financial edge over any potential challengers for the Democratic nomination.
The campaign previously reported taking in $81 million in the 24 hours following Biden’s dropout.
According to Team Harris, this was the largest amount of money ever raised in a 24-hour span in presidential history.
The campaign noted that more than 888,000 grassroots donors contributed within that 24-hour period, and for 60% of them, it was their first contribution of the 2024 election cycle.
A single call hosted by the group “Win with Black Women” brought in $1.6 million alone, according to Team Harris.
The $100 million haul reportedly came from over 1.1 million unique donors, including 62% first-time donors, as stated by the campaign.
