Back in 2016, Hillary Clinton made a critical mistake during her campaign for President that came down to just three words that would haunt her for the rest of her life. That is, of course, calling Trump and his supporters a “basket of deplorables” during a September 2016 speech at a campaign fundraising event in New York City. Word got out that she made this harsh comment and it really turned off independent voters and average Americans.
Calling millions of Americans “deplorables” simply isn’t a winning message, and it showed as Donald Trump stunned everyone with his win over Clinton that year. Certainly Hillary Clinton’s disdain for normal people was a factor that led to Trump’s win.
Well now Kamala Harris may be having her “basket of deplorables” moment that just might haunt her the same way Clinton has been haunted by her critical mistake from 2016. Kamala Harris and her Democrat allies are specifically trying to declare Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and their supporters as “weirdos”. Yeah, the irony is that’s a strange campaign push to call someone “weird.”
Fox News Host Criticizes Democrats’ “Weird” Label for Trump and Vance
In a recent broadcast, Fox News host Brian Kilmeade addressed the Democrats’ new strategy ahead of the 2024 election, which involves labeling Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance as “weird.” Kilmeade argued that this approach would fail to resonate with independent voters, much like previous attacks on Trump have.
Kilmeade noted that earlier attempts to undermine Trump by branding him as a threat to democracy had not been effective. He suggested that voters, particularly independents, were not swayed by these arguments. “There are people who don’t like him that think that, but you’re not winning over independents, it wasn’t resonating,” he said. Kilmeade believes that labeling Trump and Vance as “weird” will similarly fall flat.
The host went on to argue that many Americans might actually relate to the idea of being a little unconventional. “There’s a lot of people in America that go, ‘you know what? I’m a little weird, my friend’s a little weird, my parents are a little weird, so, you know, I kind of relate to somebody that’s not perfect, a little quirky,'” Kilmeade said. He emphasized that the public already has a well-formed opinion of Trump and that attempts to redefine him are unlikely to succeed. Regarding Vance, Kilmeade pointed out that the candidate’s background and journey to the Senate are well-known, and thus, the “weird” label is not likely to have much impact.

Co-host Ainsley Earhardt echoed Kilmeade’s sentiments, suggesting that the “weird” label would not deter voters from supporting Trump and Vance. Kilmeade added that many iconic television personalities were considered quirky, which contributed to their appeal. “Almost everybody that we watched on television was quirky and weird, that’s what made them special,” he said. “I just think that weird is cool, actually. I don’t have any problem with weird.”
The “weird” label has been particularly aimed at Vance following his controversial “childless cat lady” remark in 2021 on Fox News’ former show, Tucker Carlson Tonight. Vance had used this term to criticize Democratic women, including Vice President Kamala Harris, portraying the political Left as anti-family.
Recently, Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz used the term “weird” to describe Vance in an interview, prompting other Democratic politicians and liberal media pundits to adopt the terminology. Vice President Harris and Democratic Illinois Representative J.B. Pritzker have both used the term in their recent public statements.
Despite these attacks, Kilmeade and Earhardt believe that the “weird” label will not have a lasting impact on the Trump-Vance ticket. Earhardt concluded, “Well, they’ll do it for two days, it’s not gonna stick.”
How Do Americans React To This New Democrat Attack?
The Democrats were having a huge issue with Joe Biden in the spotlight with Democrat voters feeling extremely discouraged. There were reports that the Biden campaign’s own polling were showing New Jersey as getting far too close for comfort. Donald Trump was pulling within a few points with him in that extremely blue stronghold.
So Kamala Harris trying to appeal to her base of single white women with this fad attack of calling Trump and his supporters “weird” is somewhat smart. On the other hand, it may backfire spectacularly in the three states she must win in November.
Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin voters simply may not be interested in these attacks on personality. Blue-collar workers in Michigan are unlikely to think it’s a negative to view Trump and J.D. Vance as “weird.” Average Americans know that everyone has their own little quirks and there’s nothing wrong with that.
If anything, trying to appear like you’re this “authentic” and “connected” candidate like Kamala Harris is will probably backfire. She’s no John F. Kennedy and trying to act like it won’t land with swing state voters.
