Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Calls for Citizenship Verification of Registered Voters
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has taken a significant step in his ongoing efforts to uphold election integrity by requesting the Biden-Harris administration’s assistance in verifying the citizenship status of approximately 454,300 registered voters in Texas.
In a letter addressed to Ur Jaddou, the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and President Joe Biden, Paxton emphasized the need for data regarding these voters who have not undergone citizenship verification. He argues that this initiative is essential for ensuring compliance with both federal and state election laws that prohibit non-citizen participation in elections.
Paxton expressed concern over what he describes as a contradiction in federal law, which allows non-citizens to register to vote while simultaneously preventing states from requiring proof of citizenship for federal elections. He stated, “This federal prohibition against citizenship verification makes little sense, but it is especially troubling given the current scale of the illegal immigration crisis.”
His investigation aims to assess the extent of non-citizen registrations in Texas, as he received the list of unverified voters from the Texas Secretary of State’s office. While Paxton believes that the majority of individuals on the list are likely citizens, he recognizes the uncertainty surrounding the potential for non-citizen voting. He cited a recent audit from the Texas Secretary of State’s office, which found over 1,300 non-citizens registered to vote in a random sample of four counties.

In Texas, citizenship status is automatically verified when residents register to vote using a driver’s license or state-issued ID. However, Paxton noted that the individuals on his list did not use such identification, leaving their status unverified. He has set a deadline of October 17 for USCIS to respond to his request.
