Every now and again, Democrats show their true colors. Now they are going for broke.

Because they are doubling down on dozens of gun bills nationwide.

In Virginia, Democratic lawmakers are pushing forward with an ambitious array of gun control measures, advancing more than 30 bills through the state legislature toward the desk of Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

The proposals, which include restrictions on certain semi-automatic firearms, magazine limits, taxes on purchases, and new rules for shooting ranges and gun businesses, mark a significant escalation in regulatory efforts in a state long recognized for its deep-rooted gun traditions and strong constitutional safeguards.

“This is not just what’s going to happen in Virginia — this is the blueprint for D.C. and across the country,” Justin Davis, director of public affairs for the National Rifle Association, told The Daily Wire.

Aggressive Push Reshaping Firearm Ownership

The legislation has ballooned from 18 pre-filed bills before the session to over 30 now under consideration, with critics viewing it as one of the most sweeping gun control campaigns in Virginia’s recent history.

Key measures include SB 749, sponsored by Del. Dan Helmer, which targets certain semi-automatic firearms and imposes limits on magazine capacity—revised multiple times, including shifts from 10-round restrictions to rules on fixed magazines exceeding 15 rounds, and fluctuating provisions on grandfather clauses for existing owners.

Other bills, such as SB 727, introduce uncertainties around carrying and transporting firearms on public property, while SB 27 and HB 21 establish new “responsible conduct” standards for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers that could open the door to vague liability and lawsuits.

John Commerford, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, warned of broader implications: “Virginia serves as a stark warning to the rest of the country. Progressive politicians have hijacked the state and are attempting to turn the Commonwealth into California. Now, a once proud freedom-loving state is staring down the barrel of radical gun control measures, including bans on commonly owned firearms, standard capacity magazines, and a whole host of laws that further erode the constitutional rights of law-abiding Virginians.”

“Our legal team is locked, loaded, and ready to challenge these unconstitutional laws in court,” he added.

Concerns for Law-Abiding Owners and Businesses

Small firearms retailers and everyday gun owners face growing unease, with the patchwork of regulations potentially creating confusion and economic strain. Davis highlighted the impact on local shops: “Mom-and-pop gun shops are scared sh*tless.”

Second Amendment advocates argue that these measures risk overreach, targeting law-abiding citizens rather than addressing crime effectively, and could set a precedent for similar restrictions nationwide.

Gun rights groups are gearing up for legal battles, seeing the bills as an attempt to fundamentally alter firearm access in a state where such policies have historically faced strong opposition.
