Kamala Harris Poor Leadership From California Political Career Resurfaces

A review from over two decades ago has resurfaced, revealing shortcomings in the legal team that then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris managed while working for the city of San Francisco. The 2002 evaluation, conducted by the Department of Human Services at the request of the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, specifically criticized the Family and Children’s Services division, which handled child abuse and neglect cases.

According to the DailyMail.com, the review indicated a notable “lack of communication and leadership” within Harris’s unit. While the team received commendations for the quality of their work and their understanding of issues, their performance in other critical areas fell short. On a scale of 1 to 5, they received a score of 2 for being thorough, helpful, and proactive, as well as for their ability to recognize deadlines and quickly respond to communications.

Despite these challenges, the team was rated a 3 for demonstrating “good judgement,” with the evaluators noting that the variability in job performance among individual attorneys highlighted underlying leadership issues. The review stated, “Job performance varies dramatically by individual attorneys, which indicates a lack of communication and leadership in the unit.” Furthermore, it clarified that a score of “3” represented a neutral position rather than a lack of opinion.

Harris’s trajectory took an upward turn when she was elected as the San Francisco district attorney the following year, eventually leading her to the position of Vice President of the United States. However, reports regarding her management style have followed her throughout her career.

In June 2021, a report from Politico described the work environment under Harris as “chaotic,” marked by a “tense and at times dour” atmosphere. One insider stated, “People are thrown under the bus from the very top, there are short fuses and it’s an abusive environment,” adding that staffers often felt “treated like s—.”

Subsequent reports, including one from Business Insider, featured former staffers from Harris’s tenure as San Francisco DA, who characterized her as “unpredictable and at times demeaning.” Some noted her preference for being briefed three days in advance, yet she would frequently change briefing schedules without informing her aides, leading to frustration when they were unprepared.

In December 2021, the Washington Post echoed these sentiments, with a former staff member remarking, “It’s clear that you’re not working with somebody who is willing to do the prep and the work. With Kamala you have to put up with a constant amount of soul-destroying criticism and also her own lack of confidence. So you’re constantly sort of propping up a bully, and it’s not really clear why.”

These assessments paint a complex picture of Harris’s leadership style and its evolution over her political career. The reports of Kamala Harris being a poor leader are not new. She’s had multiple staff members leave her office and share with the media that she is a very difficult person to work with.

Back in 2021, Politico even ran an article about how many Kamala Harris office aides were reporting to them that working with her is not a “healthy environment.” 22 different current and former Harris aides indicated it’s very often to be in a tense environment because of Kamala Harris’s poor leadership and temperament.

“People are thrown under the bus from the very top, there are short fuses and it’s an abusive environment,” one anonymous source shared. “It’s not a healthy environment and people often feel mistreated. It’s not a place where people feel supported but a place where people feel treated like s—.”
