This politician has been dealing with a tough physical condition for some time now. It’s been a major blow for them and the GOP.
But now this top Republican received an important health update that changes everything.
Almost six months ago, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) was diagnosed with multiple myeloma which is a type of blood cancer.
Scalise was not able to come to work this past month due to treatment for his cancer.
But now that the treatment is done, not only is he coming back to Capitol Hill, but he’s also announced that he is in “complete remission.”
“Leader Scalise has successfully completed his autologous stem cell treatment and has been medically cleared to resume travel,” the congressman’s office said on Thursday in a statement.
“He is in complete remission and will be returning to Washington next week for votes. He is thankful for his positive prognosis, and for the support of his medical team, family, colleagues, and fellow Louisianans.”
The U.S. House came together again on Tuesday night to narrowly impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his failed handling of the southern border and the crisis that has come from it due to mass influxes of illegal immigrants into the United States.
The impeachment resolution failed the first time around after several Republicans voted “nay” on the resolution.
Currently the GOP has just a three seat majority in the House and during Scalise’s absence this past month, that lead was even smaller.
It’s safe to say that the Lousiana representative’s return to Congress will be greatly welcomed by the Republican Party, especially when it comes to important votes like Mayorkas’ impeachment.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who was the sponsor of the impeachment resolution, believed that with Scalise’s return, it was proper strategy for the GOP to bring the resolution to the floor and vote again.
“We look forward to having [Scalise] come back. And we look forward to him being a solid yes,” Greene said.
The first vote of the resolution was a failure for Republicans, as Mayorkas avoided impeachment by a vote of 216-214.
But on Tuesday night in a 214-213 vote, the DHS secretary became just the second cabinet member to be impeached and the first in almost 150 years; 1876 to be exact.
Unfortunately for the GOP though, Democrats have control of the Senate and would almost certainly acquit Mayorkas.
Regardless of the impeachment resolution, it’s critical for Republicans to have Scalise back working to make sure that their majority in the House doesn’t shrink any further.
But even more importantly, Scalise is in remission from his cancer and is in good health.
