Concerns Loom Over Harris’ Campaign in Pennsylvania, Says CNN’s Van Jones

CNN commentator Van Jones voiced his apprehension on Monday regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ chances against former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. According to the RealClearPolling average, Trump currently holds a narrow lead of just 0.3% over Harris in this critical state.

During a segment on CNN News Central, Jones outlined several factors contributing to his unease, particularly focusing on the Philadelphia area, the Jewish voting bloc, and Harris’ overall campaign strategy. “Well, I’m just nervous all the time. So I don’t feel good about nothin’ and I’m not gonna feel good about nothin’ ’til it’s over. I’m worried,” he admitted.

Jones emphasized the importance of Philadelphia in securing a strong vote margin, noting that voter turnout in the city has been declining. “Philly overall has been trending down, not in terms of going toward the Republicans, just people not getting out to vote,” he explained. He highlighted efforts by local leaders like Pastor Carl Day, who is mobilizing young voters to increase turnout, saying, “It’s a bigger, tougher fight in Philly to get that vote count up than it has been in the past. That has me worried.”

Additionally, concerns have been raised by Pennsylvania Democratic officials regarding Harris’ campaign staff’s connections within the Philadelphia region. They suggest that her aides are struggling to effectively engage with key demographics, particularly nonwhite voters. Jones remarked on the importance of the Jewish vote in suburban areas, recalling that President Joe Biden secured 70% of that demographic in the previous election. “Some polls show Kamala at 50-50. That is 70,000 votes we’ve bled away. That is the margin for victory,” he stated.

To counter this decline, advocacy groups like Zioness, led by Amanda Berman, are working diligently to re-engage Jewish voters. Jones stressed the urgency of these grassroots efforts: “It is door-to-door, bruised knuckles, tired legs, a lot of coffee and I’m nervous and worried and I’m not gonna be any way until this thing gets called.”

In a bid to boost her campaign, the Harris team has scheduled two concerts in Pennsylvania — one in Pittsburgh and another in Philadelphia — though Jones expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such events. “The other thing makes me nervous is in 2016 we had a big star-studded event right on the edge of the election and we lost the state,” he pointed out. He cautioned that working-class voters often face difficult choices: “Am I gonna go to the big cool concert this week and pay for babysitting for that or am I gonna try to figure out a way to get to the polls?”

Highlighting a sense of urgency, Jones concluded, “I don’t want people going to concerts. I want people knockin’ on doors, I want people out there fighting for this thing. I’m just nervous, nervous, nervous.”

Pennsylvania, holding the most electoral votes among key battleground states, has been pivotal for presidential candidates; 12 of the last 15 presidents have relied on its support for their victories. Newsmax political analyst Mark Halperin remarked that Harris’ path to an Electoral College win hinges on sweeping states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, especially as she trails Trump in other key regions.

CNN’s senior data analyst, Harry Enten, has been warning CNN’s viewers for weeks now that the “signs” have been present for a Donald Trump victory. He even said that they “can’t say” they weren’t warned about the likelihood of a second Trump term.

Not even in 2016 or in 2020 did CNN ever have this sort of “doom and gloom” message. So if even CNN, one of Donald Trump’s biggest haters, can see how likely it is he will be President once more, so should everyone else. We shall see how the results pan out this week.
