Democrats Mark January 6 with Controversial Prayer Session and Partisan Rhetoric
On Monday, as much of the nation excitedly celebrated Donald Trump’s certification as president-elect, leading Democrats held a solemn prayer session to commemorate the events of January 6, 2021. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries used the occasion to criticize Republicans and frame the events of that day as a defining moment in U.S. history.
The session began with House Chaplain Margaret Kibben delivering a prayer laden with reflections on the day’s turmoil.
Kibben described the events of January 6 as an unprecedented disruption, stating, “What was intended to be a historical parliamentary procedure turned quickly into turmoil and frustration and anger and fear.” She went on to invoke the concept of “enemies within” the country, asking for divine guidance to transform memories of the day into a reminder of public service.
“Wherever we find ourselves to be today we ask that You would in some way transform our memories, that the blessing we would have would be to be the reminder of the calling to which You have called us,” Kibben prayed. “To serve You carefully and faithfully; to deal with all that comes across the threshold, enemies within, enemies from without our own country.”
Schumer used the opportunity to issue a pointed rebuke to Republicans, asserting that some seek to downplay or rewrite the events of January 6. “We’re also here because we must never forget: Right in this area is where the people who sought to intimidate and also use violence to overturn our government breached the Capitol walls and the Capitol barrier. And there’s lots of people who want us to forget; who want to sweep it under the rug, who want to change the story. We will never forget. … We hope also we serve as an example to our Republican colleagues. We are not election deniers.”
Hakeem Jeffries escalated the rhetoric further, appropriating Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s famous Pearl Harbor speech.
Comparing the events of January 6 to one of the darkest days in American history, Jeffries declared, “January 6, 2021, is a day that will forever live in infamy. A violent mob attacked the Capitol as part of a concerted effort to halt the peaceful transfer of power in the United States of America for the first time in our history.” He characterized the protests as “unconscionable, unacceptable, and unAmerican.”
Jeffries’ remarks were especially notable given his own history of questioning election outcomes.
In March 2019, during an appearance on CBS News’ Face the Nation, Jeffries speculated about Donald Trump’s legitimacy as president, saying, “The American people deserve to know whether Donald Trump is either A) A legitimate president B) A Russian asset C) The functional equivalent of an organized crime boss or D) Just a useful idiot who happens to have been victimized by the greatest collection of coincidences in the history of the republic.”
Schumer closed the session by condemning any efforts to pardon individuals involved in the Capitol breach, calling such actions a dangerous precedent. “To those who used violence and intimidation to threaten our government, to hurt our government, particularly to those who threatened police officers, pardoning them would set a terrible example for the future in America and for the world, that it was okay, that it was forgivable to do this.”
This event highlighted a recurring trend among Democrats: an unyielding focus on the events of January 6. Their obsession with this single day often overshadows broader issues affecting Americans, such as inflation, crime, and border security.
For many voters, this continued emphasis seems less about healing the nation and more about leveraging the event as a political cudgel against their Republican counterparts.
The Democrats’ fixation on January 6 raises questions about their priorities. While they passionately condemn the actions of that day, they seem less willing to confront their own party’s history of incendiary rhetoric.
Schumer himself, in March 2020, made controversial remarks targeting Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh during a rally, saying, “You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
This selective outrage highlights the Democrats’ inconsistency in addressing political violence and inflammatory language. Their repeated invocation of January 6, often in hyperbolic terms, appears to serve more as a tool for political theater than a genuine effort to foster national unity.
As the nation faces pressing challenges, many Americans are left wondering when their leaders will focus on addressing the issues that truly matter.
