Legal Analyst Calls for DOJ Investigation into Jack Smith’s Relationship with Covington & Burling

On Monday, legal analyst Gregg Jarrett expressed concern about former special counsel Jack Smith’s relationship with a prominent Washington, D.C., law firm, Covington & Burling, urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) under new U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to launch an investigation into the matter.

Smith, who oversaw two major legal cases against former President Donald Trump, made a significant disclosure last Friday. According to Politico, Smith revealed that he had received $140,000 in pro bono legal services from Covington & Burling before his resignation from the DOJ. The revelation raised questions regarding the nature of Smith’s association with the law firm, prompting concerns about potential conflicts of interest and political bias.

On Fox Business’ The Evening Edit, host Elizabeth McDonald asked Jarrett about the implications of this disclosure. She inquired whether Smith might face any civil, legal, or ethical scrutiny for his relationship with Covington & Burling. Jarrett, who has long been an outspoken critic of the investigations into Trump, responded by suggesting that Smith’s acceptance of such a gift further fueled suspicions of political bias and corruption.

“Yeah, I mean, just taking this gift, for example, from a firm aligned with Democrats only fortifies the evidence of political bias and maybe corruption that drove the lawfare campaign against Trump,” Jarrett stated. “This cozy arrangement, I think, demands further disclosure, more investigation.”

Jarrett emphasized the need for further inquiry into the situation, raising several questions about the nature of Smith’s relationship with the law firm. He specifically noted that it was unclear whether the legal services Smith received were related to the two prosecutions he brought against Trump. Additionally, Jarrett questioned whether Attorney General Merrick Garland had been aware of the arrangement, asserting that the ethics of such a deal were questionable, regardless of whether it had been officially sanctioned.

“It’s exactly why I argued in a column on Fox News that Jack Smith should be investigated by the incoming DOJ,” Jarrett added.

Smith’s legal advice and the specifics of the services provided by Covington & Burling remain unclear, as Politico reported that the disclosure form was filed on January 10, the day before Smith resigned from the DOJ. The law firm, which has been linked to various political causes, including transgender activist efforts and gender ideology initiatives, has long had connections to Democratic-leaning causes.

Further fueling the controversy is the timing of Smith’s departure from the DOJ, which occurred just before Trump’s inauguration and the confirmation of Pam Bondi as the new attorney general. Upon taking office, Bondi wasted no time establishing a Weaponization Working Group, which would scrutinize Smith’s handling of the investigations into Trump. According to Jarrett, Bondi’s efforts to investigate Smith’s actions signal a significant shift in how the DOJ will handle potential abuses of power within the department.

“In fact, Pam Bondi has now launched that probe. If lawfare prosecutors like Smith manipulated the law to damage Trump’s political campaign, that is a criminal violation of his civil rights under the federal codes. Prosecutors could be prosecuted,” Jarrett remarked.

In the wake of Smith’s departure from the DOJ, a number of officials who had worked on his cases against Trump were fired, according to a DOJ official who spoke with reporters. These officials had been involved in investigations related to Trump’s classified documents and the 2020 election. James McHenry, the acting Attorney General, told Fox News that the department was unsure whether these individuals could be trusted to “faithfully [implement] the president’s agenda.”

As investigations into Smith’s legal actions continue, the focus remains on whether any unethical or unlawful behavior occurred during his time as special counsel. Legal experts and lawmakers alike are calling for a thorough review of his connections and conduct, particularly in light of recent revelations regarding his ties to Covington & Burling. The growing controversy suggests that this issue may be far from resolved, with potential legal and ethical consequences still in the air.

The Conservative Column will update you on any major updates from the office of Pam Bondi regarding these ongoing investigations.
