Egg Prices Plummet as Relief Ripples Across America

In a welcome turn of events, the cost of eggs has nosedived, offering a glimmer of hope to Americans who’ve been keeping a close eye on grocery bills. Axios dropped the news on Friday, highlighting how this kitchen essential has been sliding in price since mid-February.

The dip arrives against the backdrop of a bird flu outbreak that’s been rattling farmers and inflating egg costs nationwide, according to Breitbart News. But the tide seems to be turning.

Axios laid out the numbers: “The average wholesale price of a dozen eggs was $3 Friday, down 8% from $3.27 on March 21, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data released Friday.” Even more striking, the report adds, “It’s down 63% from a record $8.15 in the Feb. 21 report.”

What’s behind this freefall? A mix of recovering inventories, a mysterious slowdown in bird flu cases, and the Trump administration’s push to ramp up egg imports to ease the sting of high prices.

The bird flu’s grip on the egg industry has been a tough pill to swallow, especially for farmers. Earlier this month, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) spoke candidly with Breitbart News about the fallout. “We have to protect our farmers,” he insisted, reflecting on the havoc wreaked by the outbreak.

He also tipped his hat to Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, saying, “Again, you’re talking to somebody that just hates regulations, but well, because it’s here, because of some unreasonable regulations that allowed this to happen, we need to protect the people against this, and then again, be able to protect for eggs.”

Tuberville called for a shield around American farmers, adding, “I saw Brooke Rollins, and I’m a big fan of hers, and we’re getting ready to import hundreds and hundreds of thousands of eggs, and you know, that’s fine, but it needs to be a short period of time, because we have to protect our farmers here.”

Rollins herself addressed the egg affordability crunch on March 21 during a News Nation interview. When asked what she’d tell Americans struggling to buy eggs, she pointed to a downward trend already in motion for about three weeks.

“We released a pretty massive, bold plan about three and a half weeks ago including biosecurity measures, repopulating the chickens much more quickly, deregulating, getting government off the back of our poultry producers, importing eggs,” she said.

“We’ve been bringing in eggs from Turkey and South Korea, we’ve got another couple of countries we talked to yesterday to try to get supplies back up while we repopulate the chickens that were affected by avian bird flu.”

The relief isn’t just talk—data backs it up. Breitbart News’s John Carney reported on March 13 that egg prices were finally easing after months of sticker shock, a boon for Americans battered by inflation.

He explained, “The decline comes as supply constraints ease, with the USDA reporting no significant outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)—aka, bird flu—in nearly two weeks. The disease has been a major driver of egg shortages, forcing farmers to cull millions of hens and sending prices soaring over the past year.”

This shift might also signal a win for public sentiment. Back in November, a CBS/YouGov survey revealed that a plurality of Americans pinned their hopes on then President-elect Donald Trump to tame food and grocery costs, according to Breitbart News.

As egg prices drop, that faith could be finding its footing—delivering a rare bright spot in the grocery aisle.
