Nancy Pelosi’s Private Doubts About Biden’s Decline Revealed in Explosive New Book
A bombshell new book is pulling back the curtain on Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s growing concerns about former President Joe Biden’s mental sharpness before his stunning exit from the 2024 presidential race.
Titled Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History, author Chris Whipple paints a vivid picture of the tension simmering behind closed Democratic doors as Biden’s team grappled with his faltering candidacy after a train-wreck debate performance against Donald Trump on June 27, 2024.
According to Whipple, Pelosi’s unease kicked into high gear during a White House visit in May 2024 for an awards ceremony, where she was set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. What should have been a moment of celebration turned sour as she observed Biden up close. “He was not the same Joe Biden,” Pelosi confided to a friend, per the book.
Whipple writes that she was “startled by how much the president had aged” and left the event rattled, describing the day as “awkward, even painful.” Her biggest worry? That Biden’s decline could drag Democrats down in the upcoming election. “She couldn’t shake the realization that Joe Biden was a shadow of himself,” Whipple notes.
Fast forward to June, when the Wall Street Journal dropped a jaw-dropping report titled Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping. Based on dozens of interviews with lawmakers and officials from both parties, the piece detailed Biden’s gaffes, low energy, and shaky performances in meetings.
The parallels to Pelosi’s private fears were uncanny—but you wouldn’t know it from her public reaction. Taking to X, she slammed the story as a “hit piece,” writing, “Many of us spent time with @WSJ to share on the record our first-hand experiences with @POTUS, where we see his wisdom, experience, strength and strategic thinking. Instead, the Journal ignored testimony by Democrats, focused on attacks by Republicans and printed a hit piece.”
Pelosi wasn’t alone in torching the report. Liberal outlets and pundits piled on. MSNBC’s Morning Joe branded it a “Trump hit piece on Biden,” while Media Matters dismissed it as “comically weak.”
Then-CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy unleashed a scathing newsletter rant, fuming, “The Wall Street Journal owes its readers — and the public — better,” and accusing the paper of peddling a GOP-fueled narrative about Biden’s fitness at 81.
Yet weeks later, Biden’s CNN debate meltdown—where he appeared frail, stumbled over words, and failed to counter Trump—silenced the doubters. The catastrophic showing sparked panic among Democrats and a chorus of calls for him to bow out. On July 21, less than two months after the Journal story, Biden did just that, ending his campaign.
Wall Street Journal reporter Annie Linskey, who co-wrote the original piece with Siobhan Hughes, didn’t miss a beat. Appearing on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom post-debate, she stood by her reporting. “What we’ve seen in the last few days, is the reporting that we did was vindicated,” Linskey told host Dana Perino.
She described the months-long effort behind the story, emphasizing their “very high bar” for accuracy. Perino called it “the best kept secret in Washington,” urging viewers to give it a close read.
Whipple’s book digs deeper, alleging Pelosi grew convinced Biden’s advisers were feeding him an overly optimistic picture with “rosy poll numbers.”
She saw them as an insular “old boys’ club,” out of touch with reality, he writes. After Biden’s exit, the book claims he felt “betrayed” by Pelosi, who’d played a key role in nudging him out.
In a Sunday sit-down with Politico, Whipple didn’t mince words about Biden’s inner circle. “I have fresh reporting on an hour-by-hour, day-by-day basis of Biden’s final days, and obviously his decline is a major part of the story,” he said.
He pushed back on the idea of a mere “cover-up,” calling it “simplistic.” Instead, he argued, “Biden’s inner circle, his closest advisers, many of them were in a fog of delusion and denial. They believed what they wanted to believe.”
For Pelosi and others, the truth was harder to ignore—and now, it’s all spilling out.
