The judiciary has come under extreme scrutiny lately. And both sides are putting them under the microscope.

Now a U.S. Circuit Court judge had his world turned upside down from a stunning allegation.

Trump-Appointed Judge Attends Presidential Speech, Left-Leaning Group Files Ethics Complaint

President Donald Trump kicked off his nationwide “Fighting for Affordable Living” tour with a major speech in the Pennsylvania Poconos recently, drawing thousands of supporters eager to hear his plans for tackling grocery prices, energy costs, and everyday family budgets.

Among the crowd was Third Circuit Judge Emil Bove, a Trump appointee and former high-ranking Justice Department official, who attended in his personal capacity.

“Just Here as a Citizen”: Judge Bove Brushes Off Controversy

When approached by MSNBC’s Vaughn Hillyard, Judge Bove was clear and relaxed: “Just here as a citizen coming to watch the president speak.”

The next morning, Fix the Court—an advocacy organization founded as a project of the left-leaning New Venture Fund and managed by Arabella Advisers—filed a formal judicial misconduct complaint against Bove.

Executive director Gabe Roth argued that the event was too “highly charged” and “highly political” for a sitting federal judge to attend, citing Canons 2 and 5 of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges, which urge judges to avoid both impropriety and the appearance of political activity.

White House, GOP Push Back Hard: “Stop the Pearl-Clutching”

White House communications director Steven Cheung fired back sharply at critics, calling the outrage “pearl-clutching” and declaring:

“No it’s not [unusual]. Stop your pearl-clutching. An American citizen is at an event listening to the President of the United States speak. In your world, you’d rather give rights to illegal criminals over Americans.”

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley’s office echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the Pennsylvania stop was an official White House event focused on kitchen-table economic issues affecting every American family.

A Grassley spokeswoman pointedly asked where the similar outrage was for judges who have recently made anonymous, inflammatory public statements criticizing the judiciary itself.

Meanwhile, ranking Democrat Dick Durbin expressed disappointment, saying he had “hoped” the Trump-appointed Bove would show “better judgment” now that he sits on one of the nation’s most powerful courts.

The episode highlights the continuing tension over judicial ethics in a polarized era, with Trump allies framing the complaint as yet another partisan attempt to intimidate conservative jurists while the president delivers on the affordability agenda voters sent him back to Washington to pursue.
