House Democrats Alarmed by Biden’s Debate Performance and Implications for 2024
In the wake of President Joe Biden’s underwhelming debate performance, House Democrats are expressing grave concerns about the party’s future, citing both Biden’s mental acuity and a recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. These concerns were highlighted by Axios co-founder Jim VandeHei during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Wednesday.
Biden’s performance during the CNN debate with former President Donald Trump has drawn significant criticism. During the debate, Biden froze twice, lost his train of thought, appeared stiff, and made several verbal errors. These missteps have prompted a wave of discontent among Democratic lawmakers. VandeHei reported that many House Democrats are pushing for Democratic leaders, Representative Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, to have a serious discussion about Biden’s future in the 2024 race.
“I would say we’ve talked to literally dozens of House members, most of whom aren’t going to go on the record yet, the ones who are going to go on the record already have, they’re furious, like they’re just not buying it,” VandeHei explained to Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski. “Now, I would say they’re madder about the response to the debate than the debate itself. They can’t believe that he’s deflecting and saying it’s much ado about nothing. They can’t believe he’s blaming staff for it. And now this idea that an 11-day jetlag would cause you to have a poor debate performance strikes them as a crazy explanation for it.”
VandeHei and Axios co-founder Mike Allen have reported that Democratic lawmakers have been sharing private anecdotes about Biden’s mental decline. Many are frustrated that Biden did not immediately address the concerns following his debate performance.
“In all, if you’re a member of Congress, to be honest, all you care about is your voters first and your donors second,” VandeHei said. “Yeah, you like the president, if he helps you, but if he doesn’t, you will turn on him because you care about self-preservation. So they’re talking to donors, donors are furious. Voters are telling them what Lloyd Doggett’s voters are telling him, which is we want him to step aside. That’s why yesterday, we talked several people were on multiple calls with a lot of members and when there was either a show of hands, or hey, should he stay in, almost nobody said that he should stay in.”

Representative Lloyd Doggett of Texas publicly called for Biden to end his candidacy, a sentiment echoed by other Democrats amid the growing fallout from the debate. Prominent Democratic donor Whitney Tilson also accused Biden and his campaign of deceiving voters.
“They want Hakeem Jeffries, they want Chuck Schumer, the two Democratic leaders to go in and talk to him and have a very serious conversation about getting out of the race before the convention so they can have a messy but somewhat orderly transition to somebody else,” VandeHei stated. “They believe, and I think they’re right, that the Biden family and the Biden staff are trying to keep anybody who might make that case to Biden away from Biden.”
“You toss in that Supreme Court ruling and you have Democrats saying this could be an existential threat to our party, to our majorities, to the country in their own personal views,” VandeHei concluded.
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Trump’s claims of immunity in a case related to his efforts to contest the 2020 election, a decision authored by Chief Justice John Roberts in a 6-3 vote.
Currently, Biden trails Trump by 2.4% in a national head-to-head matchup, according to the RealClearPolling average. Trump’s lead extends to 3.8% when including independent candidates Cornel West and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as well as Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
Dozens of Democrats in Congress Plan To Kick Joe Biden Out
There are recent reports that upwards of 30 to 40 Democrats in Congress are banding together to try and get Joe Biden to resign by putting public pressure on him and fracturing the Democrat Party and ultimately forcing the hand of the incumbent president.
Mr. Scott Jennings, a top strategist for the Republican Party, has been saying that Democrats who are calling for Biden to end his campaign also want him to resign before the conclusion of his term in January.

This is so bad for Democrats, there’s only one way it gets any worse. The nightmare scenario for Democrats and their voters is if Joe Biden gets seriously ill and is forced to step aside due to his illness rather than doing it freely, or if he literally passes away while serving his term in the White House.
If you think this would be too far, just remind yourself the Democrats wheeled out Dianne Feinstein for another term in the U.S. Senate and she literally passed away while serving her term in the Senate in September of 2023. She was 84-years-old when she won her term in 2018 (not too much older than Joe Biden currently is) and she passed away well before her term ended ahead of the 2025 congressional inauguration. Anyone saying this isn’t on their mind simply isn’t paying attention.
