We need answers
The House task force investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump hit the ground running on Monday, demanding key documents and briefings from top officials at the Justice Department and Homeland Security.
Task force chair Mike Kelly (R-PA) and ranking member Jason Crow (D-CO) wasted no time, sending letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe.
Their message was clear: hand over all documents related to the assassination attempt.
The task force didn’t mince words, insisting that the departments set up briefings by August 16 to get this critical investigation on track.
According to Punch Bowl News, the letters specifically instructed the officials to “produce documents and information directly to the Task Force from this point forward, including any documents and information that are in process in response to pending requests.”
What is the task force?
The task force, established last month, includes seven Republicans and six Democrats, reflecting a serious bipartisan effort to get to the bottom of the attack that left Trump and two of his supporters injured, with one rally attendee tragically losing their life.
Among the Republican powerhouses on the task force are Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) and Representatives David Joyce (R-OH), Laurel Lee (R-FL), Michael Waltz (R-FL), Clay Higgins (R-LA), and Pat Fallon (R-TX).
On the Democratic side, Representatives Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) are joining the ranks.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made it clear that this task force won’t just be another committee going through the motions.
With subpoena authority in hand, the panel will be the driving force behind all House inquiries into the tragic shooting at the Trump rally.
Johnson’s office outlined the task force’s mission: “to understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination,” “ensure accountability,” and “prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again.”
As the investigation unfolds, many are eager to see who will be held accountable for the security lapses that led to the near-tragic events at the July 13 Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
All too often, the top brass take the brunt of the failures, just like we saw with the Secret Service Director who was forced to resign.
But the truth is, it took everyone on the ground that day to cook up the failure.
And it’s likely no one else will face punishment.
