Declassified Documents Suggest Obama Sought to Shield Clinton in 2016 Email Controversy

Newly released documents indicate that Russian intelligence believed former President Barack Obama attempted to suppress scrutiny of Hillary Clinton’s email controversy during the 2016 election cycle, raising questions about the impartiality of his administration’s actions.

On Thursday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley unveiled a declassified appendix to Special Counsel John Durham’s 2023 report, which previously cleared former President Donald Trump of allegations of Russian collusion. The Durham report confirmed that the FBI’s handling of the Trump campaign investigation was flawed, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller found no evidence of Trump conspiring with Russian operatives.

The appendix reveals Russian intelligence memos from January and March 2016, which claimed Obama was working to protect Clinton’s reputation. These memos were based on intercepted conversations involving then-Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and individuals tied to the George Soros Open Society Foundations.

The January 2016 memo alleged that Obama was keen to avoid tainting his presidency’s legacy with Clinton’s email scandal. It stated that Obama applied “pressure on FBI Director James Comey through Attorney General Lynch, however, so far without concrete results.” The referenced scandal involved Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state and allegations of favoritism toward Clinton Foundation donors.

A March 2016 memo further claimed that Wasserman-Schultz indicated Obama had “sanctioned the use of all administrative levers to remove possibly negative effects from the FBI investigation of cases related to the Clinton Foundation and the email correspondence in the State Department.”

The memo, citing Wasserman-Schultz, added that the “FBI does not possess any kind of direct evidence against Clinton, because of their timely deletion from the email servers.” It also alleged that Clinton’s campaign political director, Amanda Renteria, was “regularly receiv[ing]” updates from then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the FBI’s plans.

The CIA deemed this intelligence credible, noting in a written assessment that the memos and related intercepted communications were not Russian fabrications. However, the FBI largely dismissed the information’s reliability, though FBI General Counsel James Baker expressed less skepticism than his colleagues.

These revelations fuel concerns about potential bias within the Obama administration, particularly in its efforts to mitigate the fallout from Clinton’s actions. The declassification aligns with ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to expose what it describes as widespread inter-agency misconduct ahead of the 2016 election.

Recently, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard declassified a 2020 House Intelligence Committee report, which highlighted concerns among intelligence community members about the flawed Intelligence Community Assessment that underpinned the Russia collusion narrative.
