And President Trump crushes the fake news media for this grotesque lie.

Trump Slams MSNBC and CNN for Wild Guesses Over Supreme Court Chat

On Thursday, President Donald Trump fired off a sharp rebuke at MSNBC and CNN, calling out the networks for spinning tales about why he thanked Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts after his joint address to Congress. Instead of reaching out for a simple answer, the outlets dove headfirst into speculation, prompting an exasperated response from the president.

The moment in question unfolded on live TV right after Trump’s speech. As he passed by the justices, cameras caught him saying to Roberts, “Thank you again, I won’t forget.” It was a brief exchange, but it sparked a firestorm of theories from liberal commentators, many tying it back to a Supreme Court ruling from July 2024.

That decision granted former presidents significant protection from prosecution. To some pundits, this was the obvious reason for his gratitude, even though more than seven months had passed.

But this wasn’t Trump and Roberts’ first face-to-face. The Chief Justice had, after all, sworn Trump in on Inauguration Day—a fact that seemed to slip past the talking heads. Still, the narrative took off.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes jumped in, claiming Trump was thanking Roberts for “paving the way” for his return to the presidency. “Donald Trump understands that John Roberts is his guy who sprang him and saved him from prosecution with his ruling on presidential immunity, which ultimately paved the way for Trump to be elected president again,” Hayes told his audience, doubling down on the theory.

The speculation didn’t stop there. Symone Sanders, another MSNBC host, asked NYU law professor Melissa Murray to weigh in. Sanders floated the idea of a “preemptive thank you for something that’s about to happen.” Murray answered, pointing to the immunity ruling as a “big get out of jail free card” and suggesting Trump had plenty to be grateful for.

Meanwhile, over at CNN, political director David Chalian admitted he’d “love to know” what Trump meant. He tossed out the inauguration as a possibility, only for a fellow panelist to swoop in and insist it was “obviously immunity.” The guessing game was in full swing—no phone calls, no fact-checking, just pundits riffing on air.

Trump wasn’t having it. Early Thursday, he took to Truth Social to clear the air and blast the networks for their sloppy reporting:

“The Fake ‘Play the Ref’ News, in order to create a divide between me and our great U.S. Supreme Court, heard me say last night, loudly and openly as I was walking past the Justices on the way to the podium, ‘thank you,’ to Chief Justice John Roberts,” he wrote.

“Like most people, I don’t watch Fake News CNN or MSDNC, but I understand they are going ‘crazy’ asking what is it that I was thanking Justice Roberts for? They never called my office to ask, of course, but if they had I would have told these sleazebag ‘journalists’ that I thanked him for SWEARING ME IN ON INAUGURATION DAY, AND DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB IN SO DOING! The Fake News never quits.”

The chatter wasn’t limited to cable news. Joy Behar of The View also waded into the fray, though she escaped Trump’s direct ire.

Recalling the handshake with Roberts, she said, “There was a moment there that really stopped my heart, and that was when Trump shook hands with the members of the Supreme Court.” Quoting Trump’s words—“Thank you again, thank you again, won’t forget it”—she mused, “Now, what do you think he was referring to?” Like her cable counterparts, Behar leaned toward the immunity ruling as the answer.

For Trump, the explanation was far simpler: a nod to a job well done on Inauguration Day. But with no one picking up the phone to ask, the airwaves filled with guesswork—and the president wasn’t about to let it slide.
